This feed is not legal advice.

three basic flavors of crank, in descending order of importance: 1) right-wing pandemic deniers/antivaxers/etc 2) centrist/lib NPI deniers 3) Covid doomers

Many, many thoughts on this, starting with the idea that it is not surprising people feel that the government is much more likely to interfere or punish them for their speech because at this moment that's just objectively true.

A new survey from @knightfoundation.org and @ssrsresearch.bsky.social reveals a disquieting decline in how free Americans feel to use the freedoms protected by the #FirstAmendment without government interference or punishment. 🧵

There’s also the fact that countries that do the most for women and young families have among the lowest birth rates. I’d like it to be true that “implementing the strong social safety net I want will also address fertility” but I haven’t seen evidence that it is true.

The other thing worth noting, we've actually poured TONS of money into making child-rearing less expensive, from the CCB to subsidizing daycare programs to increasing federal leave benefits in 1991, 2000, and the 2019 sharing incentive. How much more should the state provide to address birth rates?

I'm not sure I entirely buy this. Are costs - esp housing - mitigating the growth of families? Probably! But how significant is it relative to other factors (particularly women prioritizing careers)? This is an empirical question that remains too understudied to make definitive claims about. 1/2

"We end up with declining fertility not becuase women have stopped wanting families but because the math of building one keeps getting harder." @SabrinaMaddeaux speaks hard truths with @MikePMoffatt in today's podcast episdoe.

it’s crazy how so much of the right wing cultural push is just ‘let’s all pretend we never learned how bad/complex all this stuff is and go back to the way things were when we were ignorant’ ngl I get why it’s powerful messaging but it really is the death of knowledge/growth/expertise

I'm calling it: "Start smoking" is going to be mainstream MAHA / Republican health advice by 2028. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

There is no rigorous evidence that Gundry’s lectin-free diet works and may actually be harmful, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Gundry has also pushed questionable theories about other health topics too. In an episode on the popular Doctor Mike’s YouTube channel in defense of his diet, Gundry argued that smoking can actually make some people live longer. It finally took my pro-vaccine dad reading Gundry’s Wikipedia page—which includes Gundry’s claim in an abstract that mRNA Covid vaccines “dramatically increase” inflammation—for him to leave me alone on this topic. A Reuters report says that Gundry’s abstract, which also received an extensive correction, doesn’t contain “reliable evidence.” Conversely, research does show that Covid vaccines decrease inflammatory markers when people get a Covid infection.

I think “I am the protagonist of life” is the main psychological appeal of this kind of conspiracism. You risked nothing, you did nothing, and other real people are suffering the things you’re pretending to think are bad, but in the end you’re the great hero for surviving your imagination.

My fellow men: y'all need to relax with these trucks man. You look silly. Grow up. That big ass 4-door with the little ass bed, the Denali trim? Embarrassing. You ain't hauling shit but Tanner and Colt. What you need is a minivan. Free yourself from the shackles and buy a Toyota Siena.

More incendiary stuff. Prince Ali, the FA president from Jordan, who was a rival to Infantino in his first election in 2016, alleges FIFA attempted to effectively blackmail theJordanian FA, withholding funds until they had provided backing to Infantino for next year’s election.

I also don't totally understand what it's trying to prove. Like ok maybe the best men in the world are better than the best women due to inherent physiological advantages. So what? Do you go to a track meet and go "why is anyone watching this? a horse could easily outrun all these guys"

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social · 2d ago

it's interesting how many men get satisfaction out of knowing that other men can beat elite female athletes. like ok, maybe the best high school boys team in the country can beat a WNBA team, but YOU can't

I’ve seen some people expressing discontent with Jays’ management because of this year but as far as I can tell all their offseason moves were sound. The problem is a bunch of the holdovers, whom we all love, sucked ass. I kind of chalk this all up to “shit happens”.

This is why I always laugh at the right-wing arguments that China is meddling in elections to oppose Trump. My friend, the best thing in this world for China is just more and more Trump. They can buy him off and watch as he tears down 100 years of American institutional power and resilience.

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.

Apropos of nothing other than that they popped up in shuffle play, but god I miss Japandroids. Four absolute banger albums and some of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. I hope they’re both happy in whatever came next.

I know this would be closing the barn door after he horse has been reelected president, but if Democrats win both chambers I'd really like to see a concurrent resolution deeming January 6 an insurrection under 14(3). 1/
