Yesterday the Labour Friends of Israel resurfaced from the dead and released a "new report" which urges the Andy Burnham government to not impose a comprehensive ban on trade with Israeli settlement goods and services because.......this would "become a de facto boycott of all of Israel". Oh really?

Among other steps, these parties have suggested they will act to:

1⃣Shift construction to the “settlement blocs” which will remain part of Israel in any future peace deal

2⃣Spurn annexation plans

3⃣Dismantle outposts

4⃣Launch a crackdown on settler violence. (5/14)

Q: What do the long-term solutions look like for reconciling settlements with the 2SS?

A: Land swaps and shifting Israeli economic incentives. (6/14)

First, some context.

Over 75% of settlers live near Israel’s border, and many moved for economic reasons.

Under a peace deal, mutually agreed land swaps, a principle previously accepted by 🇮🇱 and 🇵🇸 negotiators, would allow Israel to absorb the vast majority of settlers. (7/14)

As for the other 25%, in-depth studies measuring settler attitudes towards relocation and economic dependence of isolated settlements, suggest that Israel could repatriate residents through ending financial assistance to the communities. (8/14)

With a 2SS still a possibility, 🇬🇧 should adopt a pragmatic and clear-eyed approach to advancing this goal:

🏦Sanction violent extremist settlers and organisations

💬Encourage the next 🇮🇱 govt. to:

🫸 Halt expansion outside the major blocs and remove outposts

These measures will help address challenges posed by settlements. But they will also help address larger obstacles to a 2SS, helping restore the Palestinian Authority's credibility.

Any agreement will require 🇵🇸🇮🇱institutional strength and public buy-in. (10/14)

Untargeted measures, such as blanket bans on trade with settlements, will backfire politically, economically and legally.

🚫 A bo…

Every day I find some new VC who spends his days retweeting some of the most abhorrent racist Islamophobic nonsense on X and today that person is Josh Wolfe.

My great-grandfather was among the first Jews sent to Dachau, but it had operated for 8 years prior. He arrived to find a concentration camp already full of communists and other leftist dissidents. The public's acceptance of their incarceration paved the road for his own.

fascists use anti leftism to build power and co opt centrists and liberals. they are doing this right now! this is what all the gibberish anti communist rhetoric is about!

💯 This is the kind of consensus that is an unquestionable premise. Not just majority opinion, but the basis of public debate. Jewish-Israeli society looks at you like you're crazy or evil if you suggest it's not up to Jewish-Israelis to decide how much to oppress the Palestinians and for how long.

Nathan Goldwag @goldwagnathan.bsky.social · 2w ago

The Israeli political consensus, including Eisenkot and Netanyahu, is that the Palestinian question is something to be resolved by Israeli Jews, on their own time and on their own terms. Liberal Zionists who refuse to understand how radical this is will simply be unable to understand this discourse.

LIBERALS: Why do you people always say we have to destroy capitalism, all we have to do is elect enough Democrats and they’ll reform it into something that works for everybody COMMUNISTS: A company that got rich making shackles for slaves is still in business making restraints for migrant workers

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com · 2w ago

Lemme tell you about the angel of history being blown backwards into the future: The shackles these people have been put in are Hiatt brand, same company founded in 1780 to mass produce shackles for slaver ships.

I adore you Leon, Egyptologist here, they were built by a largely volunteer force (corvée labor) of 25,000. The builders were very well fed, paid in bread and beer, and received excellent medical care. There was no slavery whatsoever, it is a common misconception.

um, so everyone cheering on egypt in the world cup realizes how the pyramids were built right? but i guess that's a conversation you're not ready to have

At a time when it is widely believed that the U.S. has a substantial housing shortage, and certainly has deep housing affordability problems, further burdens on overstretched public housing agencies and other grantees for the sake of unitary executive control is a worrying development.
