Replacement account for my original one @aardvarkz (I got locked out by a 2FA issue) NYC "The Future is Soon" Cosmology, Climate, Consciousness, Causality דברים תמיד יכולים להיות הרבה יותר גרועים

I thought that Bluesky was upset with the ridiculous raid this morning, until I saw that the real rage was reserved for lashing out at Jeffries strong [but somehow perceived as terrible] statement of condemnation, as if he had personally searched her underwear drawer.

I don't think that the self driving cars are quite ready for the challenges of NYC, but they are continuing to improve every day, and meanwhile human drivers are doing shit like this every day. The breakeven point is getting extremely close, and we need to be prepared.

2 Pedestrians Are Killed in a 5-Car Wreck in the Bronx (Gift Article)

The driver, an 81-year-old man, failed to stop his car at a busy intersection and hit two other vehicles, according to the police.

"if you cannot tell the difference between a war, even a cruel war, and people massacred in their beds in front of their children, then you are part of that evil." Yonit answer to Zohran Mamdani’s October 7th statement, which wrote that the suffering did not begin nor end on that day.

This piece really elucidates the underlying problem of how Mamdani's entire approach to Jews, Israel, and Zionism is fundamentally flawed, and why I find it so unsettling. It's such a drastic departure from how mayors from Giuliani to de Blasio to Adams dealt with the Jews of their city.

Not to pick on James here, but this is a naive reading of the stated position. They are in fact advocating breaking the cycle and achieving peace just as they claim. The difference is that they mean do it at the cost of Israel's complete and utter annihilation. That's their solution.

James Hell Brooks@kleinman.bsky.social · 2w ago

If this is your position then there's basically no way you could ever want peace in Israel, just a neverending cycle of slaughter

The issue here is one side is focused solely on the ethics and the costs (IP theft, resources, etc.) and doesn't care about what it actually does, and the other only looks at the accomplishments, nevermind how they were achieved. They are having two completely different arguments, with zero overlap

ONE TYPE OF PERSON ON SOCIAL MEDIA: I don’t like AI THE OTHER TYPE OF PERSON ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Pretty naïve of you to say that when it just zip zorped the gringle in less than seven kleebs. SEVEN. KLEEBS.

I have typed and then deleted so many replies today. While it's been reassuring to share in observance of Oct 7 with the community, it's also been pretty awful wading through the hundreds of ignorant and hateful messages denying, supporting, minimizing, and justifying the most heinous of crimes.

There are many great books on this list. I would start with Tibon to understand what happened on Oct 7 and why, then Sharabi and Goldberg-Polin to feel the pain, and The Future Is Peace to see where we go from here. #booksky

Today, we are revisiting some of these astounding works as we remember those who are no longer with us, honor the acts of bravery from so many, and keep their stories close to our hearts. bit.ly/4ziCouD

A lot of things in the last three years have shocked me, but perhaps none quite as much as the complete inability of large swathes of the left to criticize Israel without lapsing into virulent antisemitism. Such a profound failure on both the moral and pragmatic level.

If you want to know why Jews are suspicious of you when you're just trying to be a well-meaning antizionist gentile, consider that these two things were written by the same man, Guangtian Ha, a (currently suspended) religion professor at Haverford

a passage from an article by guangtian ha that reads:

We make this call amidst growing concern about antisemitism on our campus. Questions have arisen in the context of a number of specific situations, including external influences from Lower Merion, from donors, and from some alumni who are hell-bent on defining the " ways to be Jewish. This, of course, flies in the face of thousands of years of Jewish tradition which is fundamentally based on interrogation, questioning, and truth-seeking. We take these attacks on our anti-Zionist Jewish community members seriously and we understand the real damage the state of Israel causes for the entire Jewish world when it claims to be acting on behalf of all Jews while engaging in horrific atrocities that - truth be told- mirror some of the worst stereotypes of Jews that have been a part of European racism for centuries. We will be clear: antisemitism should be unacceptable at Haverford, but the energy and consideration which some in our administration have granted these bad faith actors suggests otherwise.

One of the acutely minor consequences of 1,200 people, mostly Israelis, mostly Jews, being murdered by Hamas on 7 October 2023 was finding out just who celebrated, equivocated, or who didn’t say anything at all but magically regained their ability to comment on this brutal conflict a few weeks later

Another reason why the current wave of Left antisemitism hurts so much is that we just spent the past 20 yrs with DEI, antiracism, intersectionality, microaggressions, minority/indigenous/immigrant rights, etc. except now we see that NONE of that applies when it comes to the rights of Jews.

One of the reasons the Green Party motion hit so hard is because it confirmed something for Jewish ppl like myself that until now was mainly experienced in our personal lives, namely, many progressive friends going down anti-Zionist propaganda rabbit holes

I think it's more an indication of where they would like things to head, but the point stands. The trick of dressing up their arguments as "social justice" while pushing towards more oppression is wearing thin.

Catherine Prendergast@badtoss.bsky.social · 3w ago

There has never been a campaign against "Zionism" as a concept that wasn't followed by a lot of Jewish death. People's obsession with keeping Jews stateless is a tell of where things are heading.

this "forcing Jews to explain how the clearly antisemitic thing is antisemitic before pretending to not understand the explanation" game is a big part of why I didn't post those pictures of Macklemore, it was clear forcing Jews to post and see that was part of the fun the game.

Samuel ✡️ 🗽@bluelion70.bsky.social · 2w ago

It’s literally a game for these people, and not even a new one. This post echoes a quote that is over a hundred years old about how people delight in accusing a Jew of theft particularly because they get the joy of watching him turn or his pockets to prove that he hasn’t stolen anything.

If the headline motion is itself racist, the refusal to even pretend to make a carve-out for Jewish members of your own party is perhaps most revealing. Evidently, a majority of Green Party members who voted for the motion and against the amendment simply have little interest in finding an accommodation with Jews.
And I think this speaks to what a lot of people fail to understand. That for Jew-haters, antisemitism is fun. Even better, it frequently forces Jews to play the game of emptying their pockets and patiently explaining why this obviously horrible, racist thing — a slogan, a placard or a burning of ambulances operated by a Jewish charity
— is in fact antisemitic. That, too, is part of the fun.
You don't need to label every antisemitic terrorist attack (and there are horrifyingly many to choose from this year alone) a "false flag" or suggest that "Zionists control the media" to oppose a terrible war or in any way dilute support for Palestinians. You certainly don't have to, as Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories claimed in a recent interview, say that Jews in Nazi death camps were called "Muslims".
I could attempt to explain why they do this. Why so many people believe that Jews, whether stabbed on the streets of Golders Green or murdered in gas chambers, are molecularly incapable of being victims. Indeed, how and why the Holocaust itself is an example of Jewish power and privilege. But that would be to play the pocket-emptying game.

What strikes me about this is that for 20 yrs the BDS movement insisted that they weren't antisemitic and nominally promised to support the 2SS (while shouting FtRttS), and got deeply offended when questioned about their intentions. And now they just come out and say "yeah we want Israel destroyed"

Matt Steinglass@mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 2w ago

The Greens declare that Zionism, the movement of national self-determination of the Jewish people, is racism because such a state favors one ethnicity over another. Two secs later, it declares support for the national self-determination of the Palestinian people. This is stupid and antisemitic.

The levels here. -He should have had access to citizenship -if we couldn't give him that, he at least should have been free in his community -If we couldn't give him that, he at least should have had comfortable and humane detention -if we couldn't give him that, he at least should have had life

This is exactly my position on capital punishment. I’m not opposed to it in theory; I do believe that there are crimes severe enough to merit the death penalty. However so long as there is even the tiniest chance that a person has been wrongfully convicted, capital punishment is unconscionable.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com · 3w ago

It’s not that I think people who commit heinous crimes don’t deserve to die. But I’ll never support the death penalty as long as our justice system is unjust. An unjust system should never have the power to make irreversible decisions, especially when Black people disproportionately pay the price.

Bluesky is too full of smart people arguing past each other to score debating points. For instance, I just read a long thread about LLMs, with both sides deliberately ignoring each other's points.
