one thing that i found both enchanting and upsetting was becoming old enough (i.e. reaching the age of approximately 18) to learn that pre-scriptural religion does not tend to be codified and as such contains a lot of crap like this where a particular belief exists only in a particular area/time

Yes, this is a VERY IMPORTANT POINT. No one is arguing about poverty, generally. (It’s bad, it’s expensive, we all agree.) It’s about what it means when the economy pumps out huge quantities of relatively cheap goods, as ours does. Is that good or bad? Does it make people richer or poorer?

yeah - the conversation here is not generically about poverty, it's specifically about the economy producing more and cheaper goods than in the past, and whether that's a benefit to people who don't have much money.

I think part of the problem, and why people are so married to the idea that a big part of "the poor tax" is consumer goods lasting less time, is that as environmentalists we hate the idea that cheap disposable stuff might be good at all. So we make up why the less durable option is bad for poor ppl.

I think the rejection of boot theory is important from a policy perspective because it leads to the obvious but somehow elusive truth that cheap goods benefit poor people and we should celebrate cheap goods

There was a NOTAM saying jamming was going on. It is the pilots duty to know and read NOTAMs and make adjustments from that. Either they ignored the NOTAM (bad) or they knew about it and didn’t adjust properly which could include not flying (very bad).

Today's bsky argument about "boots theory" seems to come down, from my perspective, to 2 different ideas of what it says- (1) believe that poor people could make better choices to save themselves out of poverty (2) believe that poverty enacts worse choices, creating cycles of more instability.

A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

My thoughts on the cheap shoddy goods revealing consumer preferences: I have the money now to buy higher quality items, but I can’t find them. They just don’t make high quality fat women’s clothes. There are many pieces that can’t even be tailored now.

The issue, of course, is that a disposable appliance that only lasts 3 years is more junk for the landfill.

I understand your position, but those are different situations. People straight up both envision a system much milder than exists and cannot imagine a modern world without that imaginary system. By default they have no real grasp of reality on the matter, but are usu. sympathetic to individuals.
