One thing we've been missing for a while is a major party leader who is willing to do the big thinking. It's not been good for our politics, it's let Reform off the hook for realistic policies, and it's allowed the Cons & LDs to duck their oen hard political questions. I hope that will now change.

Burnham is proving a theory of mine about political comms. There’s a Walter Lippmann line that goes something like: “The press doesn’t tell us what to think, it tells us what to think about.” But I actually think that’s what governments do. They can direct people’s attention wherever they want.

Just as I was finishing uni in 2010, I went to London for a job interview with an MP - and another parliamentary staffer offered to put me up. That evening a bunch of staffers came over to hang out - including Walker. Now and again two or three would leave the room - casting a sideways glance at me

A presenter for the Murdoch-owned Talk station is set to appear in court this Thursday, charged with assault by beating following an incident at a Trump fundraiser in Windsor last September. News UK has kept him on air throughout 🧵 bylinetimes.com/2025/09/25/t...

mildly funny that X is having blazing rows about Nolan’s Odyssey because he cast black people in it and Bluesky is having blazing rows about whether a noted Homeric translator’s LRB review of it misses the point or not

To every trans Londoner: this city is yours too. Today we celebrate London Trans+ Pride and reaffirm a simple truth: you should be free to live as yourself, without fear or prejudice. You are loved. You are wanted. You belong here.

I tried to listen to that In the Room pod - but had to stop after a few minutes because of the way Cleo Watson was talking about Burnham making the Lobby travel up to Manchester for his economic speech. As if he made them schlep to some medieval hovel.

Just seen a comment about N10N saying “enjoy your Greggs steak bake” because, truly, that is the only food we have anywhere in the North of England

This is why the "B..but he stood for leader before and lost! Twice!" discourse was so dumb. Maybe people staying in politics when they lose or fail & sticking at it makes them...better? If we applied today's norms on when you're meant to leave politics, Churchill would've been gone after Gallipoli

I don't remember Burnham having this relaxed communication manner in his 2010 or 2015 Labour leadership contests. Which shows he can learn - & if he can learn this he can learn other things too. This alone elevates him above his recent predecessors.
