speaking as a zine guy who started blogging in the ‘00s because it felt like a natural outgrowth, none of us have memories of this because it DIDN’T FUCKING HAPPEN

In high school I worked at Best Buy. On 9/9/99 we had a massive Dreamcast day. It was a CELEBRATION. And it was a blast.
Fun fact: I once wrote the Obi strip for a super sick Adam Wingard album. www.discogs.com/master/19571...

NEW: The new Apple Watches double as AI-powered listening bugs for generating convo "recaps" or transcripts of any previous 15 seconds. But fear not, Apple says, this data isn't sent to Apple/gets encrypted, speakers aren't ID'd, and there's a chime for the 15-second thing. @lhn.bsky.social reports:
I wrote about the influencer-fication of the Minnesota State Fair for @stribgoingout.startribune.com :) with my amazing colleague Rachel Hutton :)
Move over, Coachella. The State Fair is where it’s at
Call it the influencerfication of the fair. The internet’s cool kids are embracing the folksy vibe at the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

So glad we’re tackling the societal issues of our time like 17-year-olds checking out DVDs from their local library
Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
This was a game-changer article for Vehlinggo that was part of that 2016-2020 peak for my li'l site. It opened a lot of doors, making my and my readers' experience more fun and interesting.
Published this ~7,000-word Drive piece 10 years ago today, which means Drive is nearing the 15th anniversary of its wide theatrical release (9/16/11). 10 years! Also, 15 years! #DriveSoundtrack vehlinggo.com/2016/09/07/d...

It’s funny to consider that in 30 years I’ll be in a retirement home where, as a group, we’ll sing such oldies as “Electric Feel” and “Young Folks.”
Not everyone knows this but the name of that song by The Who is NOT ‘Teenage Wasteland’; it’s actually called ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ and it’s actually by the band Wheatus
Happy bday to my best bud/boss/surrogate big bro @philnobilejr.bsky.social. He’s Fango’s brains, backbone & SVP (!), making 10000 daily decisions to keep this place a source of pride to us all. Over 15 years, we've built a friendship based on trust, candor, karaoke & Walkin’ Around Soup. I love him!
If the tech bros. kill off the Commodore, imma go postal. “The millennials’ Williamsburg was not perfect, but at least it was special, and in this era of tech bros sitting at the helm of the neighborhood, it risks losing all swag entirely. “ slate.com/business/202...

This is insane. When I was in first grade my parents let me walk 3 blocks to school in the mornings, and home after it was over. The independence that I got as a child helped me so much in my life. No parent should face charges for something like this, let alone be convicted!
A mom of five was convicted last week of delinquency of a minor. Her offense: allowing her 5-year-old son to walk about a half-mile by himself in their gated community. The government also placed Karyann Parkinson on its child abuse and neglect registry, where she will remain for seven years.
Scoot deserves all the accolades. Consider even just his performance in Halt and Catch Fire. Wowza.
putting scoot mcnairy in a mediocre streaming tv project is the same as grating dogc parmigiano reggiano over the half assed salad you just made
I heard there was a secret chord that Jesus played and it pleased the Lord
Taking notes listening to BITCHES BREW and man, I could never write about jazz. Look at this nonsense: "ghost trumpets" "this shit owns" "my guy here playing the drums like they're on fire and he's trying to put them out" "anyone who says they can tell when one song ends & another begins is a liar"
NEW ICE wants to build a nationwide database of voters, their voting history and, potentially, their party affiliations too. ....and it's willing to pay someone up to $5M to do it www.wired.com/story/ice-pl...

Really complete and complicated portrait of how data centers reshape a community, the first in what’s gonna be a good series
Massive AI infrastructure is being built out across the US, and it’s probably coming for your state. There’s one place where the data center occupation already arrived – 20 years ago. So if you want to know what it will look like... www.theverge.com/cs/features/...

Is Flock the only mass surveillance tool/network that people should be worried about? No. But it is an entry point for people from all walks of life to the fight against mass surveillance and I'm glad people are paying attention and taking action.
The Ringer "Big Picture" podcasters are bummed that Bill Simmons loves to use ChatGPT to reanimate the corpse of Roger Ebert on their show, and one of them just learned on air that Simmons' own show is SPONSORED by ChatGPT talkeasypod.com/amanda-dobbi...
