I am here to complain about the Toronto Maple Leafs and societal decline

"i just learned something insane from a stranger. why doesn't everyone know about this" is a great style of post, right up there with "why is nobody talking about this" alongside a link to one of the biggest news outlets in the world talking about it. nobody does ignorant curiosity like us humans do

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

Odyssey was great in the theatre but Oppenheimer is gonna stand as Nolan's best movie. You make a movie about a big bomb, you do the big bomb, you have the entire third act be set in various Hearings, and you nail it despite your weakness as a filmmaker being dialogue? A+

there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”

the Nolan/Wilson Odyssey thing is a perfect discourse driver because she a) is a brilliant, trailblazing academic who brought a classic to a new generation b) wrote a kinda lousy slam review of a very popular film gets a whole lot of people mad at b), who get accused of denying a). hours of fun

Not trying to dunk but I enjoy that apparently the too-obvious bands you have to check off in the 90s are these ones. Like of everyone you could have picked it's good grunge, decent grunge, tedious alt rock with some grunge, and "being submerged in mud"

Quote prompt reading "post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains"

There’s a kind of guy on social media who acts like you’re a moron for believing in gradations. You say we’re teetering on fascism, they go “umm we were founded on genocide” You say Musk is having a racist breakdown they go “umm he was always racist” Truthers for the concept of things getting worse.
