A thing I learned recently is the extent to which parasites were a problem in the US South up until more recently than you’d think. It gives some basis to the right wing belief that ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine are cure-alls, because older people will have actually seen these work miracles.

It occurs to me a big part of the antipathy of even liberal politicians to anything that would reduce Americans‘ energy consumption or shift it to renewables is “My professional identity is built around influencing middle eastern oil production, you can’t just make it irrelevant!!”

"Liberal bubble" has only ever meant anywhere where right wing perspectives aren't artificially elevated and forced into everyone's feeds.

and that's what the fascists want to take from not just trans people, but pretty much anyone really. they want it to be illegal to have fun and self-improve with friends at their whim. they want to look at the genitals of children in their area. it really is that simple.

but more importantly, like, most of us consume professional sports more than play casual sports, and there's a lot of sports out there that matter as a fun activity to do to make and enhance friendships, get stronger, get exercise, work on skills, feel good about and improve yourself!

Bluesky's nuclear block supports a culture of consent. Each user can completely prevent another user from having any access to them on this site. Right wing harassers on X hate consent. They hate being told "no." They hate not being able to force their posts onto others and target others.

He cites users' ability to mute & block folks as a positive, which is good. It's also why right wing chuds thankfully can't get a foothold here - b/c they violate community norms & get nuclear blocked out of normal people's timelines. Bluesky isn't a *liberal* bubble - it's a *decency* bubble.

Apparently to message Mountain Hardwear customer support by any way other than voice I need to enable receiving ads by imessage notifications.

This comes up in all kinds of policy contexts. In addition to all the problems described in this thread, programs for everyone are politically resilient. Programs targeted to not the poor are perennially attacked and always eventually undermined, if not ineffectual from the start.

it's not just that means testing unfairly gatekeeps care from people on the edges of the economic goldilocks zone. the logic ripples out through culture and influences how we talk about poverty, race, and disability. we do not talk about helping people without first talking about who not to help.

the only people who could ever earnestly support means testing are people who've never had to be means tested before. it is a humiliating, dehumanizing bureaucratic hostage negotiation with a system whose primary purpose is to *not* provide financial support as often as humanly possible

The Seattle City Council just voted 6-3 to approve Joy Hollingsworth's amendment to delay universal school lunches for kids, replacing them with vouchers for qualifying low-income parents to buy groceries over school breaks and weekends. Eddie Lin, Alexis Mercedes Rinck, and Rob Saka voted no.

And this applies to cis people as well. Just because the "truly knowing yourself" isn't as obvious or pronounced for you as trans people... You've still gotta do it. You've got to be able to see yourself, face yourself, all of yourself. You've got to know who you are, beneath all the stuff.

Jokes aside, I see people go "I think I'm trans but I'm not gonna address it because of all the difficult stuff, what would I get out of it?" And the answer is true joy. That's what you get out of it. Unless you face yourself, fully and completely, and know who you are, you will never find true joy.

We then asked about specific electoral reforms: proportional representation, fusion voting, ranked choice voting, and top two elections. All landed in the 20s/30s both for and against, with a high share of don't knows. RCV is the most polarized by party. PR has the least opposition and most unsures.

If you post survey data, news articles, etc. without a link back to the source whenever possible, you are weakening the informational chain of custody and making it harder for other people to confirm that they're seeing accurate information. This holds even if you're mad at whatever it is.

I saw this to any administrator who will listen. Invest in first year writing and the writing center. That will help address so many problems--learning, retention, time to degree...
