I'm heartbroken to share that Marvin (known to readers of There Is No Place for Us as Maurice) died earlier today in a workplace accident. He was 43. Natasha (Natalia in the book) asked me to share this news because she is too devastated to do so herself. We are all in shock.

If you were lucky enough to finish most of your cognitive development before widespread GPS adoption ? Try to use a paper map now as often as you can so that you keep that ability. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The thing is yes, paper maps, but also: You naturally learned how to get around more than people do now. I knew my way around my early neighborhoods where I drove a lot better than I have in the ones where I had GPS all the time.
Hard agree. Except during unusually busy times (like Christmas), I could be at my gate 30 minutes after leaving my house. And that included the time it took me to park.
Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine have once again voted Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport the best airport in the United States. Do you agree? https://www.wpri.com/news/tf-green-voted-best-domestic-airport-for-2nd-straight-year/
As someone who grew up in majority white spaces: Parents, Black children deserve better than being the only 1. They are often put in dangerous spaces with hostile people & "white friends" often don't know how/won't protect them. If you see your child being the only 1-consider what YOU need to adjust
While all these deaths have hit me, Nolan Wells has truly made me weep. He goes out with all of his white friends, and they return without him. This is the America that has always existed, but people feel very emboldened under this trash-administration.

Shocked to hear about Dr. Raúl Pacheco-Vega's passing. He was such major presence online. I can't tell you how many times I've turned to his resources to learn how to manage literature, organize data, and become a better academic writer. Even never having met him, I know he will be sorely missed.
Every summer I repost this article on how to spot drowning. Please read it and pass on. In the last few years I’ve had SIX messages from people who saved a kid’s life after clicking on the link from my feed. slate.com/technology/2...
Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

If you are a teacher who your students don't feel comfortable asking for help, get out of education. If you are a union who thinks it's great that students do not feel they can talk to their teachers, shut down.

Every time we hear about how genAI has pushed another teenager to suicide, another person into committing a mass shooting, or generated CSAM of school girls used to blackmail their schools, remember we were told that what we'd be hearing about is a cure to every cancer, and global poverty itself
Really have a hard time getting over all these guyAIs looking at this world simply teeming with problems with well known solutions & deciding the best way they can help is to create whole new global problems that no human alive even remotely understands never mind knows how to actually fix

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
I have watched this at least ten times today. 😂
This shit took me OUTTTTT
