Today is Nakba Day, when we commemorate the roughly 750,000 Palestinians who were forcibly displaced by Zionist militias during the 1948 Palestine War. Acknowledging the Nakba and making restitution is the precursor to building a better future for everyone living in the region.

Now's a great time to support LaVonnia Moore, a rural Georgia librarian who was fired because she approved a library display (set up by community members) that included a book featuring a transgender character. Her legal case enters the mediation process this week. 📚 www.gofundme.com/f/help-lavon...

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.
January isn't yet over and at least nine people have been murdered by ICE this month, six of them in ICE detention and three in the streets.

If you voted for this, we are not friends. There is no love between us, because your hatred of our neighbors killed it.
The Honduran-born Charlotte resident filed a police report after the officers let him go. Racial profiling, no warrant, no due process; but what else can one expect from a regime committing extrajudicial murder on the high seas? Trump's gotta go.
Mourning those murdered by Hamas isn't incompatible with mourning those murdered by the Israeli state. Demanding that the hostages return isn't incompatible with naming & demanding an end to genocide. Naming the power imbalance & impact thereof doesn't desecrate those murdered two years ago today.
Hey #asheville folks... We've released an album to benefit BeLoved Asheville on the first anniversary of #Helene. This is a trailer for a full demo vid we made. 16 tracks recorded in the days & nights after the storm passed over. coopersonfire.bandcamp.com/album/the-mo...
Shana tova to everyone except RFK Jr. and other vaccine deniers. I have Covid for the first time ever, so I'm ringing in 5786 with apples, honey, and acetaminophen.
Also: I put together a book list for this piece, as I do sometimes when what I'm doing in one essay will be wildly inadequate for the topic. I chose these for various reasons, & there are other books that could be added that are not. I'm a human person with finite time over here! But it's a start:
Palestine and Israel
This is not a comprehensive list. But here are some places to start, to learn, to engage. Truth. Dignity.

Tisha B'Av was this past weekend, and this was my meditation on it. I don't always know how to express the depth of my distress about what's going on in Israel and Gaza, so sometimes I fall back on my coping tactics from high school - mediocre free verse poetry and sketching.
"“God’s name is being desecrated through our sins,” Rabbi Amital wrote nearly five decades ago. “Is it possible to remain silent?!” Today, his challenge tragically rings just as true." My words in the Forward today (appropriately on Rav Amital’s yahrtzeit) forward.com/opinion/7575...
Gaza is starving. Where are the American Jewish leaders?
A fear of being labelled antisemitic still deters American Jews and Jewish institutions from taking a position that is morally correct.

The ICE camps are concentration camps. They should be called concentration camps. It is, of course, important to distinguish between concentration camps and death camps, but also, I am not sure we will know when or if we undergo the transition from concentration camps into death camps.
The Israeli army has been killing dozens of Palestinians at aid hubs in Gaza practically on a daily basis. Soldiers have told Haaretz they have been ordered to fire at crowds “even though it was clear they posed no threat” www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...
There seems to be one thing "uniting" Palestinians, Israelis, Iranians, and everyone in these endless wars: Innocents keep dying. FFS, children, children keep being killed. This isn't liberating anyone. This isn't gonna bring justice for anyone. This isn't gonna bring long-lasting peace to anyone.
If that’s what they do to a US Senator with a question, imagine what they do to farm workers, day laborers, cooks, and the other nonviolent immigrants they are targeting in California and across the country. Or any American that dares to speak up. I will not stop fighting to demand accountability.

hey here's something I would love us all to do like RIGHT NOW: find out if your local library is doing any kind of pride programming or display, and if they are, email them to say thank you and why it matters to you. whether or not you're queer. especially if you're in an area where it's fraught
