Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting

Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

Since apparently I don't talk about it enough, did you know I have two novels published? WEAVER'S FOLLY is a cyberpunky urban fantasy for fans of Shadowrun and Kim Harrison's Hollows series; WHEN THE STARS BLEED is a space opera for fans of Mass Effect and Firefly! Links below.

You should read this. Timnit Gebru is one of the most important voices in AI, so the recommendation goes a long way.

One of the handful of articles telling it like it is instead of misinforming the public. By @saragoud.bsky.social for @thebulletin.org Yes. Its bad science based on numbers out of various behinds, but that's not how most of the rest of the media is discussing it. thebulletin.org/2026/09/how-...

I like how my doctor's office intake form has a "date started" and "date ended" for allergies. I (obviously) know those dates well and celebrate them every year in the traditional fashion.

Because it can. Because they figured out it's a cost we will "tolerate." Bad teeth will stop your heart. Tooth health is heart health. Some people only find out they have life-threatening cancers at the optometrist. Eye health is life.

And why does "health" insurance mean "everything but teeth and glasses" - being able to eat and see properly is rather critical to health. I'm so sorry y'all had to go though this. Special needs folks should get MORE care, not less!

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

“Everything is 40% more expensive because of AI” is a great line for an opposition party trying to unseat the AI-supported incumbents, if any Democratic consultants wanted to take a short break from dehumanizing trans kids to actually try winning a contested election.

The Steam Frame starts at $1,059, but it was probably supposed to cost about $750, as the RAM crisis continues to raise prices. https://t.co/Oq9XUHM630

EVERY MAKER LEAVES THEIR MARK. No tool created by humans, trained on our data, can escape its inevitable human corruption. They want you to think it's logical like a pair of calipers or something so you fail to designate responsibility. It was created to deny, and thus, kill.

The truth was that if United Health had an AI that was accepting a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate, United Health would stop using the AI in about 0.2 seconds.

Overheard: "Daggerheart is an indie, and it's half the price of other books." No shade to Daggerheart, but they're able to get printing wholesale on a scale other publishers can never match. Its first month sales beat many games' lifetime records. Maybe it's not an indie?
