This year’s @civicsoftech.bsky.social conference schedule is now live! Join me and @alliethrall.bsky.social for a panel featuring @lbyock.bsky.social, @kellyclancy.bsky.social, and Chad Hamilton. We’ll reflect on their experiences as caregivers challenging ed-tech. See the full schedule at:

Join us! We will review tips for submitting to the SIG, writing a strong proposal and provide time and support for writing during the session. Non-graduate students are also encouraged to join to share insights and work on AERA proposals. See the flyer for more info and the Zoom registration link.

Looking forward to sharing what @charleswlogan.bsky.social and I have been learning from parents pushing back against edtech at @4sweb.bsky.social this fall!

Oh hey excited to attend my first 4S to present, “Parents, Caregivers, and a Growing Resistance to TechnoPower in Schools" with @alliethrall.bsky.social and “Refusing AI Hype in an Undergraduate Classroom: Reflections on AI, Equity, and Public Education" with Sepehr Vakil. See you in Toronto 🍁

As an elementary teacher, read alouds were one of my favorite times of the day. The first time I went into an elementary classroom and saw students sitting on the carpet, huddled around the Promethean board, watching a read aloud on YouTube, I was startled.

Kids are watching a whole lot of read-aloud videos on YouTube, at home and at school. But what are those videos actually like? And what do we lose when reading books to children is delegated to screens? www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/an-expl...

I talked to Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth for a story about screen-time limits in schools. Short version: we need to think about the social and academic trade-offs when we allow private edtech to become primary infrastructures for classroom teaching and learning. www.fox4news.com/news/richard....

Richardson ISD considers limiting screen time in classroom

As the conversation around screen time in the classroom gets louder across the country, Richardson ISD is looking at its own use of technology.

Writing in a @civicsoftech.bsky.social post from 2024 about Cowan’s book, @alliethrall.bsky.social and Paige Arnell note that rather than being “liberating and time-saving devices for women, [new technology] actually eliminated male household labor, while creating more work for women.” Read at:

Here’s to caregiver-educator coalitions against Big Tech! And as @alliethrall.bsky.social and I begin analyzing survey responses for our caregiver edtech resistance study, we’re seeing some caregivers attuned to building relationships *with* teachers rather than seeing them as adversaries.

This article frames tech as a battleground between parents and schools. But I was chatting the other day with a school official who's leading an effort to shift her district away from device-based learning, and she told me--every teacher she's talked to is on board. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/29/t...

Parents/caregivers of school-aged children - if you’ve been working to challenge ed-tech in your kids’ schooling, please consider taking this survey! The survey will be open until April 12!

Charles Logan@charleswlogan.bsky.social · 5mo ago

Update: we're collecting surveys until April 12. I'm collaborating w/ @alliethrall.bsky.social and Tony Talbert to explore why and how caregivers challenge ed-tech in their child's/children's K-12 school/s in the US. Caregivers doing this work can complete our survey at tinyurl.com/CaregiversEd...

Our research study's recruitment flyer. The flyer reads, "Call for Research Participants! Caregivers Challenging Ed-Tech in Schools. Across the United States, caregivers are pushing against educational technologies (ed-tech) in K-12 schools. We want to know why and how caregivers are questioning technology in the classroom. Who can participate? Caregivers with one or more children attending K-12 school in the United States, who...Currently and/or in the past worked to challenge the purposes and roles of ed-tech in your children's K-12 schooling. What is involved? Complete one ~15-minute survey. Participate in one ~60-minute recorded Zoom interview (optional). Questions? Contact our Research Team. Dr. Charles Logan. “I want to talk about the way that the survival of the AI industry depends upon you, the generation coming of age right now, agreeing with them that you have essentially no say in your own future.” Great open letter by @civicsoftech.bsky.social partner!

A beautiful open letter to Georgetown students by the Executive Director at the Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law. medium.com/center-on-pr...

Truth be told, I want to see studies that look into these emotional burdens more! It seems like with AI we’ve put emerging teachers in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t position, that isn’t super relatable for me as a seasoned teacher who feels comfortable articulating my refusal.

"[W]e remain concerned about the emotional burdens that AI may be placing upon early career teachers" and "how this emotional burden may be exaggerating divides between experienced and inexperienced teachers at schools," - @jbpleasa.bsky.social, @dankrutka.bsky.social, and @alliethrall.bsky.social
