If you'd like to start off thursday cozy at #IMC2026 check out panel 1505, which is all about protecting animals. If you prefer a high-energy start, well, I'll talk not only about cute stuff, but also about animal (medical) murder-mysteries! #medievalsky #EarlyModern #envhist

1505-a - Alpine Animal Welfare: Perception and Treatment of Animals in Villages from Valais to Tyrol

Abstract:
The lives of humans and animals in the Middle Ages were far more intertwined than today in general, but this was especially pronounced in the Alps: Villages depended on alpine pastoralism (the Alpwirtschaft) for their livelihood and due to a lack of suitable waterways alpine transportation relied on the work of pack and draught animals.

This paper will investigate the relationship between humans and animals in the Alps in the Late Middle Ages, based on sources from rural alpine communities from Valais to Tyrol.

The paper will show that alpine villagers had not only a profound awareness of the needs of their animals but were also willing to go to great lengths to ensure their well-being: The first part of the paper is about how villagers dealt with challenges to animal health stemming from diseases and the environment, including sophisticated and effective measures to curb the spread of infections.

The second part is a showcase for how people in the Alps treated animals as beings which deserved to be cared for: This included special rights for tired animals, a kind of maternity leave for pregnant draught horses and even a form of ‘retirement homes’ for old cows.

Interrupted the dissertation wrap-up for a small sidequest: Had the pleasure of spending the last week at DiGRA for co-presenting some of our initial findings of SURVIVE! While waiting for the upcoming publications, in the meantime you can find a brief write-up here: dl.digra.org/index.php/dl...

Some highlights from DiGRA 2026 in Maynooth, Ireland: the beautiful old campus, @mellowne.bsky.social presenting his first peer-reviewed paper (proud supervisor moment!) and having the opportunity to represent SURVIVE together with @amayer.bsky.social and @rainforestsb.bsky.social!

Amazing call by some dear colleagues for an edited anthology (in German/English) on methodologies & methods for game cultural studies, exemplified through the use for 'The Legend of Zelda' series. There is also an English CfP linked on the website! Abstract Deadline: August 03, 2026

Just because a piece of technology is being rolled out in a not-for-profit or public-service context, it doesn't mean it's "tech for good" or "responsible technology". It can still be extractive, janky as hell, and basically no good at all.

Routledge has now confirmed that the volume we have been working on for some time, Cultural Game Studies: Critical Approaches, will be out on 10 July 2026 and is available for preorder from 19 June 2026. There is a 20 % discount code attached, and there are also review copies (links in comments).
