in this case i don't think player-directed difficulty control works for me. if exploration means encountering unique places/enemies/items/etc then of course i'll want to explore. but if that also acts as a way of lowering difficulty then i'm both rewarded for and disincentivized from exploring
reading @ponett.dog 's post on Mina and I STRONGLY agree w/this; I feel like modern balance that assumes 100%ing a game is "normal" difficulty (I'm looking at you, metroid dread) removes one of the biggest benefits of RPG-ish systems, which is that grind can provide flex room on the difficulty curve
