Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.

Awful. More horrible science news "The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) learned yesterday that the Department of Defense (DoD) will stop processing & delivering the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data no later than 30 June 2025."

What happens in the Arctic doesn't stay in the Arctic. It affects us all. The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) has released their Summary Arctic Climate Change Update. Read it: www.amap.no/documents/do... Nobody can later say they weren't warned, again and again.
Potentially no updates to sea ice indices coming from the US for a while... this is horribly damaging to global climate science. Yes, there are EU and Japanese alternatives to some of these, but multi-dataset inter-comparisons are a critical part of assessing reliability and confidence in the data.
This is horrible. I don't even know what to say. Some of our most key polar data. "As a result, the level of services for affected products below will be reduced to Basic—meaning they will remain accessible but may not be actively maintained, updated, or fully supported." nsidc.org/data/user-re...

More than art, a data story. The #ESOTC2024 cover art shows a mountainscape based on ERA5 data from 1975-2024, depicting annual and decadal temperature anomalies in Europe. Sun and clouds convey contrasting east-west climate conditions of 2024 in Europe. Full report: bit.ly/3G9MdEX
🌡️2024 set a new record as Europe's warmest year, with central, eastern and southeastern regions—totalling almost half of Europe—reporting record-high temps. 85% of Europe was warmer than average. Get the details and analysis in the #ESOTC2024 report. 👉 bit.ly/427BzqJ #C3S @wmo-global.bsky.social

Very nice new tool from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social. Certainly quite some room for further additions/improvements, but still great to easily share some basic ERA5 stats in no time.
It is also the source of ERA5 data that is used by the new ERA-Explorer: the interactive web-application lets you calculate daily, monthly and annual statistics in seconds clicking on a location on the map. ERA-Explorer 👉 era-explorer.climate.copernicus.eu

"What ever it takes" sollte sich unbedingt auch auf den Ausstieg aus der Nutzung fossiler Energieträger beziehen. Seit 1991 haben wir für über 1800 Mrd. € Erdöl, Erdgas und Kohle importiert und uns mit den Zahlungen überhaupt erst in die heutige dramatische Lage gebracht.

Astonishing sea ice dynamics north of Greenland at the moment. One of the few occasions (2003, 2011, 2013 and 2018 in the last 25 yrs) of large polynyas opening up in that region during winter. One to watch!
Well, what did I say? Now there is again open water north of #Greenland where the thickest sea ice of the #Arctic used to be. An almost 500 km long lead opened up over the last few days. This is similar to the event in February/March 2018, which resulted in a series of scientific publications.
Situation in Northern #Greenland is very like February 2018 right now. Looks like we'll see a reopening of the North Greenland polynya again. Extremely warm for the time of year at @dmidk.bsky.social 's weather station on the most northerly tip of Greenland #KapMorrisJesup
The waters surrounding sea ice in the #Arctic remained warmer than average across nearly all areas in December. Some of the largest anomalies were found across the southern Barents Sea region. Data: NOAA OISSTv2.1 (www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/opt...) 🌊

(Thread)
Great and scary visualization! While unfortunately well on track to plow through the 1.5°C target, average global warming sits around 1.2°C. And we already see wildfires in January, flood-inducing rain around the world, droughts…well below 1.5 or even 2°C!
NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
