Thinking Clearly About Sampling and Representation With the Total Survey Error Framework

Collecting a sample that represents the population of interest well constitutes a challenge across the social and behavioural sciences. Psychology in particular frequently relies on convenience samples—most notably students and, increasingly, online participants—with a tendency to either (implicitly) assume representativeness without substantive justification, or to acknowledge a lack of it only in passing. In contrast, researchers rarely engage with the actual implications for their inferences, which undermines the generalisability of psychological findings. Critically, representativeness must be defined with respect to variables relevant to the target of inference, rather than superficial demographic diversity. Here we present the Total Survey Error (TSE) framework as a methodological tool that systematically addresses the multifaceted sources of error—particularly those related to representation—that emerge throughout the research cycle. Although TSE originated in survey research, its principles are broadly applicable to any psychological study seeking inference from sample to population. We offer practical strategies for identifying, preventing, and mitigating representation errors to improve the credibility and generalisability of psychological research.

Reading in bed at night is, speaking generally at all events, an unhealthy practice as we have previously had occasion to remark¹ and there is fortunately a tolerably universal consensus of opinion amongst the public that the habit is better avoided. Probably the fear of its being the cause of a conflagration of the bed curtains and perhaps of the whole house has had something to do with the feeling against it in the past, and the danger no doubt was an obvious objection in the days when flimsy bed curtains were fashionable and when the electric light, which is practically free from such danger and which does not vitiate the air as gas and oil lamps do, was not available. Dr. Hugo Feilchenfeld of Berlin has recently made a study (recorded in the Medicinische Klinik) of the subject with the object of finding out exactly what harm is likely to result from reading in bed and in what circumstances the practice is most injurious. He finds the chief danger is to the eyes, partly because the light used is frequently insufficient and so placed as to dazzle them, and partly because it is difficult to hold the book so that full benefit is obtained from the use of both eyes. This is more particularly the case when the reader is lying on one side. Again, there is generally a temptation to hold the book too close to the eyes and this of itself tends to induce

A variation: Scientists who claim they’re “not interested in causality” because they assume the term only applies to deterministic, law-like relationships that are unrealistic in their field. Instead, they’re interested in how “X drives Y”, the effects of X, the “extent to which X matters for Y”>

Some people confuse correlation and causation, some people confuse causation and “deterministic direct 1:1 causation” 🥲

Like the “uneducated” explanation, the “religious” one depends on a confusion between correlation and causation. Even if all women today with large families are religious, not all women who are religious have large families. Religion is correlated with total fertility, but not obviously causal.12 That is, something else mediates the association between religion and fertility. We don’t know what that is.
