Excerpt:
I push out against the hardness in front of me. It resists, but only for a few moments. Cracking and crunching noises fill my senses where only the beats were. I push harder. It fights me, but i cannot stop.
Cracks appear in front of me and… whatever it is i’m in is breached. Light and air flood over me and i gasp, drawing in lungfuls of air to sate the burning.
Thu-dump! Thu-dump!
My heart calms now that i have air, but it still beats rapidly. I still have to get out, i am in danger here! Get out and get up!
How do i know all this?
I push again, harder now that i’m breathing again. The cracks widen… and then i’m falling forward out of a large tear. My whole world tumbles, and then i’m half laying on a cold, rough, dirty floor, half hanging out of my vacated prison. I draw in another breath and start coughing, expelling dark liquid out of my lungs, but i am breathing fully and properly now.

Her web was in tatters, and the only thread she felt remained whole was Cat. She feared that was a delusion, and that Cat would hate her now that it had been so long. The simple fact that she was afraid Cat would hate her was infuriating enough. The cacophonous chorus from Cat storming out of her shop that day still stung her mind.

Gleeman was not the kind of man to panic, though. Actually, yes he was the kind of man to panic, what he wasn’t was the kind of man that gave up easily as soon as the going got a little tough. Well, yes, he was that kind of man that gave up easily, but he wasn’t the kind of man that complained about it. Oh, who was he kidding? He loved complaining. It was one of life’s pleasures. Not that anyone could hear him complaining down here. Even Sepesh wouldn’t notice him when, if, he ever came to sleep in his coffin. Gleeman was going to die, alone, stuck in a mouldy basement with a truly despicably awful smell drifting into his admittedly enormous nose, with not a single soul knowing he was there. What an awful way to die.

A loud thumping noise erupted above him, as though someone pounded on the trap door down here.

“Are you going to sulk down there all day, or are we going to discuss what to do about it?” The trapdoor opened, causing Gleeman to blink in the blaze of light that fell upon him like a ravening pack of wolves on an unsuspecting rabbit. “Well? And Sepesh? What have I told you about maturing cheese in the basement?”

“Not to?” The vampire’s voice drifted down.

Someone had grassed on Gleeman, and Gleeman’s money was on the idiot that thought storing cheese in a damp basement was a good idea.

We have to get out, get away from this town and away from that hotspot of madness and contradiction that is that manor! We need to go home! I need to go home, get to a place of safety and normalcy, get this cacophony inside my head to shut up, sit in a dark room for a week just so I can sort through the insanity and get back to normal again!
I should never have taken this stupid job! I know it was too good to be true! Who cares if it’s a cult? It’s not like it’s my job to suss those types of things out in this world! Stupid, stupid self appointed authority! You got nothing real done and then this… this happened…
What happened?
I saw what was real. But it can’t be real. Only-
The words stick in my throat, no longer having the weight of historical certainty backed up by her looming face to give them credence.
I saw what was real.
I saw the magic.
I saw my hands.
I saw the students, saw far more than I ever let myself comprehend, saw a part of them that screamed out into the world that they were more than human. How did I miss all that? How was that possible? Am I blind?

Their voice - which tends to be driven by the why I want to tell the story. I don't picture them physically in detail (unless it's vital to the plot/story or character development); I leave that up to the reader.

I write & then edit at the end, after a month's break - unless I'm writing to a paid deadline (a film, etc) How I edit my book.. I use my simple screenplay feedback thing 👇 - and do 1 edit focusing on each. Once I've done all of those, I have a 2nd draft. Then I pause for a month and re-read.

"You never ask anyone to be more than they are, but when they try to be, you never question it. That unending faith and optimism. How do you do it?"

I can't PRY my eyes away from his. I don't want to. "It's easy. You just believe everyone's doing their best."

"Teach me," he murmurs. He raises my face to his and kisses me. The chill of his lips battles the fever that rushes from my heart and across my skin. My book falls to the floor, forgotten as he grabs a hold of my waist and lifts me onto the table, so our faces are even. I place my hand against his chest, maybe to push him back, but it settles there like it belongs. I've wanted this for so long, and he is everything I imagined--hot and cold, firm yet gentle--and I take it all in, take him in, as each icy breath he exhales plays along my tongue and I inhale in Jack, Jack, my Jack. Every thought crystalizes around this moment, until he's all I can sense. It's not until my lips have grown numb that he finally pulls back, leaving me swaying on the edge of the table.

"You're the best, teach," he says, breathing heavily and dripping with sweat like he ran a race. His lips are too red, like maybe I burned them, and I can't help but stare at them, waiting for them to return to mine, but he leaves me there, engulfed in pine and wintergreen and longing.

After much wheedling, Jo had acknowledged that the doctor probably recognised her from the infirmary. Kenneth felt sure that there was more to the story, but prying into her medical history was crossing a line even between the two of them, so he buried his curiosity as best he could.

“Thank you, Dr Edwards,” Jo replied silkily. “I see you have made time for the barber and changed out of those same rumpled clothes you arrived in. Are we to presume that you have grown tired of being mistaken for a vagabond?”

The doctor pressed his thin lips so tightly that they almost vanished altogether. The top of his head may be tidier, but his square jaw sprouted a decided shadow and the buttons on his waistcoat were misaligned. As though he had dressed and set out in a great hurry.

Something warm and solid pressed against his chest – he let go of the tree, tried to pry himself free of whatever it was, and found his hand trapped by fingers that seemed as hard and unyielding as iron bars.

“Breathe, Sabbat. I have you. Breathe.”

*What do you* think *I’m trying to do?!* But the pain was receding, ebbing back into wherever it hid itself between attacks and, after a minute or so of forcing himself to breathe slowly and deeply, the nausea followed it back down into the depths.

“It’s worse, isn’t it?”

“I-”

“If you say you’re fine,” Archer said, perfectly calmly, “I’m going to turn you upside down and hold you head-first over this ravine until you reconsider the wisdom of lying to me when I’m in the process of trying to save your life. Are we clear?”

“Fuckin’ crystal,” Sabbat growled, for want of anything else to say.

“Good. So, is it worse?”

“Aye.”

“Have you been trying to hide that from me?”

Of course he fucking had. Didn’t Archer know anything about him? “Take a fuckin’ guess.”
