I still don’t think Burnham will go early, not after his quite definitive answer. Would be against the brand? But the temptation must be very strong right now. December the 10th is apparently the rumour.

I believe TX Hispanic turnout is up *a lot* since it exists in GA and NC, states that ask race/ethnicity on voter registration applications. I caution TX doesn't. This is data from an algorithmic surname match that works okay but has known limitations, particularly in mixed neighborhoods

As turnout in Texas nears 3 million votes, Hispanic turnout is now exceeding presidential levels. More Hispanics have voted than did at this point in the 2024 presidential election. What's driving this huge increase? Young voters.

The hollowing out a priceless national asset, under a techbro vandal. As with higher education, this type of move might be tolerable if there was *any government policy at all* on what the ultimate plan is. But there isn't.

BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.

I realise i talk about this a lot, but I find it genuinely staggering that basically nobody outside of this website talks about how Brexit and the Lib Dems have broken the pipeline of middle class liberals voting Tory. It's totally destroyed the Tory vote under 40! And nobody seems to care!

Also 'the Tories usually win' is a) only true from the 1920s until the 1990s, b) contingent on the Tories being a welcoming home for middle class liberals

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Given Russia is tonight striking power plants in Ukraine, and Zelensky though welcoming of the idea said it was ‘news to me’, perhaps now the media will stop pushing breathless breaking news alerts of whatever Trump says as fact.

I don’t think it’s a good result for them. By-elections are weird and very unique opportunities. If this was one of the few seats where the Lib Dems could establish themselves as challengers, I think LDs would have had a better candidate and also would have won it.

Chaminda Jayanetti@cjayanetti.bsky.social · 2w ago

they *weren't* going to win - that's the point. they weren't going to win that seat with national polling where it is and, more to the point, Burnham's own ratings where they are. it's the Burnham honeymoon! you're not winning a safeish Labour seat during a Labour PM's honeymoon!

GPs are drowning in patients’ online requests for advice, after last year’s commitment by the health secretary that all online queries would receive a same day response. Hospitals now face the equivalent, as specialists are being overwhelmed with advice requests. www.bmj.com/content/395/...

Sensible propositions on social care involve some form of inheritance/retrieval of funds after death or selling of home in life. Exempting homes, which are a primary source of wealth and income, from any tax is clearly irresponsible and encourages poor decisions around care.

The Tories only got 49 seats more than the Lib Dems at the last election. Over half of them are reasonable targets on a decent day to go orange. Not seeing much which addresses any of this predicament for the Tories by Badenoch.

I was pretty cynical about Man City’s financial doping and didn’t like the idea of stripping titles etc, but seeing their utterly shameless response and desperate threats makes me want the book thrown at them.

UAE warns Andy Burnham it may pull billions in investment for the UK's proposed Oxford-Cambridge tech hub—dubbed the UK's Silicon Valley—in retaliation over Manchester City's guilty verdict, per The Telegraph.

In three seasons Manchester City won the Premier League, 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2017-18, they recorded £360million in commercial income from Abu Dhabi-based sponsors The independent commission found that just £43m of that was actually paid to City by those sponsors

It will never not be wild to me that the Russians attacked Keir Starmer's home, successfully spread falsehoods about Starmer's love life, and this didn't changed British politics and British political elite behaviour *at all*.

I think most of my political camp are quite happy for small broad tax based rises, but that has to accompanied by a very clear plan, and messaging of that plan, of exactly what it is funding. People then need to feel the specific improvements related to that plan over a promised period of time.

Kind of grimly fascinating as always, coming from the former director of strategy to a Labour PM. There just isn't a future for a centre-left politics that is this hostile to pretty basic progressive values.
