Had a cool “metaphors across languages and cultures” moment today while doing my Japanese lessons. I learned that the Japanese word for independence is “自立”, using the characters for self and stand, and in Norwegian the word is “selvstendighet”, which also contain the elements “self” and “stand”!

I always say I love my country the way Anthony Bourdain did, not as a benevolent state or one founded in innocence but as vast, beautiful place full of discrete people and cultures such as has rarely been attempted and worth fighting for.

If you think of Supreme Court justices as philosopher kings who care about holding the American republic in their trust, you will be perpetually surprised and disappointed. If, instead, you think of them as very similar to 6 Republican and 3 Democratic senators, then things make much more sense
