Reviews for this one have been mixed since its release. For some folks, it's a sign of Carpenter's decline; for others, it's a return to form. My own reaction falls somewhere in between. Don't get me wrong - it's fantastic. But it doesn't make my Top 3 John Carpenter films. That said, I always enjoy it on the rare occasions I get to watch it. Sam Neil is perfect as our designated audience surrogate/asshole, John Trent, veering between smug self-assurance and panic at the drop of a hat.
