Disabled Prof. Long Covid. He/him. Songs written: https://tinyurl.com/5n6zmhm5 “Until we are sick, we understand not.” (Keats) “By reason of my infirmities, I am, . . . like a plant, always held to the same place." (St. Basil)

The combination of this historical neglect and the profound debility of Severe ME make for a scary situation: in desperate need of social solidarity à la breast cancer 5ks or concerts for HIV/AIDS, but instead so sick as to fall out of public view entirely, confined to our homes or beds.

HOW IT CAN SHRINK ONE'S
LIFE BITS BY BITS

The first panel BEFORE ME shows a building labeled work, one labeled cafe, one labeled party, one labeled gym, as well as a house, a mountain with a campground, and an airplane flying above labeled travel.

MILD ME however only has a house and the work building.

MODERATE ME only has the house

SEVERE ME only has a bed

And the VERY SEVERE ME panel is blacked out.

Wish I knew what to say for Severe ME Day. It acknowledges the severe form of ME/CFS, a disease many people still have never heard of even as Covid explodes its prevalence: as many as 9M sufferers in the US alone, a quarter of whom are severely ill—so sick we cannot leave our homes or even our beds.

Updated ME/CFS prevalence estimates reflecting post-COVID increases and associated economic costs and funding implications

In this article, we update our earlier analyses of myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) economic impact and its National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding versus disease b...

Ah, there it is. COVID seems uniquely suited to waking up the lurking beasts that drive an immune system mad. The virus itself can cause immune dysfunction but it magnifies the effect by waking up its buddies (Epstein Barr and cytomegalovirus). And then "friendly fire" goes amok. #MedSky 🩺

Let me pop back into Professor mode and go over a bit of epistemology for this rando (and sadly many others) who “can’t believe Long Covid is real”: *your* not being able to believe p has no bearing on the truth, or even the plausibility, of p.

Love to have a rando on here basically demanding to see my medical bloodwork results because they can’t believe that long covid is real. This is a proported leftist. There really is a problem and right wing people arent the only ones who are in denial. Have those conversations with people.

I am happy to announce the publication of a new English translation of Jacob of Serugh's four homilies on Cain and Abel. It was wonderful to work on this project with Jeff Wickes! The homilies are fascinating theological and literary works: svspress.com/verse-homili...

If “anything can be a weapon“ then anyone – everyone – wearing, eating, holding, driving, drinking, cleaning or petting anything can be armed and dangerous. Thus, we’re all eligible for shooting if we do any of those in the direction of the brown shirts hunting brown people.

My writing recently — poetry and fragments — keeps pulling me into odd, uncomfortable places, so I am very reluctant to share it. It’s just there, slightly terrifying me. But, of course, no turning back now! This is vague and probably dull to anyone else, but I felt due for a small void-scream.
