This is a really great thread about the "listen to software engineers" argument I'm seeing a lot of, but I want to also add that some of the most vociferous criticism I've heard about the way companies use genAI and how divorced the marketing is from reality has come from other software engineers.
So it's useful to talk about the specific ways in which this argument is dishonest because I think a lot of liberal and left-leaning people are very vulnerable to this rhetorical bludgeon—the idea that you should "listen to experts". But let's unpack what exactly Giggies here means by "experts".
