PhD in Economic History and post-doc in History, Lund University. Early modern wealth, consumption, and household economy. Also hobby ttrpg-creator, that part is probably equally important for my social media presence.

My mom sent me some papers that belonged to my grandfather, Darwin Randall Crum, which included a collection of “Disfrustrating Puzzles” he created

Photo of a bound folder labeled “Disfrustrating puzzles and diversions for people who don't have time for the hard ones"COIN ARRAY PUZZLE
You have nine coins, arranged as shown below. Which coin can you remove, (being careful not to touch the others), so that only eight coins remain?
[Drawing of nine coins]DISCONNECT THE DOTS PUZZLE
If you very carefully erase the lines which connect the dots you will find a common household pet waiting to catch a mouse. Be sure you erase only the lines connecting consecutive numbers. (Hint: Start at number one.)

If Billy pulls down on the rope, will the 100 lb weight move up or down?

"Wiggle your cursor to activate Gemini" is so insane I stared at this ad for a solid minute. Like, there's no explanation for this beyond "we desperately need to pad activation stats", right? Wiggle the cursor to activate Gemini?! WIGGLE THE CURSOR?! THE THING I DO FIFTY TIMES A DAY?!

Googlebook ad
"Meet Googlebook, with Magic Pointer. Simply wiggle your cursor to activate Gemini."

Apart from the likelihood that this would be used to "correct" people not only from being audibly disabled, but also audibly racialised, working class, from stigmatised regions/countries, it also moves us towards a world where we can't know real speech from fake, and that feels like an agenda.

Even apart from all the problems with deepfakes and missinformation - and those are many - this is what probably hit me the hardest. Stutters and similar speech impediments are already stigmatized. By surgically removing them fron live footage we even further paint them as weird and wrong.

The patent also posits that such a tool could be used to remove filler words like “um” or “ah” from live speech, or to erase stutters or speech impediments.

Jim Crow, which was so much more brutal than we learn in school, is within living memory. My parents were born within its bounds. People got killed for looking "funny". That's not a bit or a joke. Human beings died in agony in front of jeering crowds for "Well, your eyebrows were raised wrong."

adding to my list of why we need to be doing in person work: you know the 3D flesh people in front of you are real. you can believe that. it’s weird to think about that becoming the only way we can be certain about things.

This is legit one of the most dystopian things I've ever read, and I could literally feel the hope leaving my body as I read it. We cannot allow this type of technology to be wide-spread, it has to be legislated into the ground. futurism.com/artificial-i...

This can be legislated out of existence. We have legislators, laws & institutions for making new ones. But technological exceptionalism—the idea that digital tech is so vital to our econ & welfare that regulating it is to our detriment—has become so entrenched that citizens forget we have this power

Microsoft Patents an AI That Can Literally Put Words in People's Mouths in Real Time

Microsoft just filed a patent for an AI product that would be able to transform live video in real time to alter speakers' words and faces.

Heja Akademiska hus!
