Missouri's Amendment 3 would restore an abortion ban with limited exceptions, but its advertising is focused on a different provision: banning gender transition care for minors. The campaign never explicitly states it would repeal the constitutional right to abortion voters approved 2 years ago.

French Historian Marc Bloch, 1940. This is from his book Strange Defeat that tried to make sense of why the French elite succumbed so seemingly easily to the Nazi takeover. Bloch, a nerdy middle aged Sorbonne professor, joined the resistance and was executed by the Gestapo in 1944.

SCOTUS has done this again and again: without determining the merits of the case, claim that it is an emergency to allow Trump to continue to upend the status quo until his changes become irreversible.

Breaking my heart this morning: “Fitting ankle monitors on noncitizens without a criminal history who remain in compliance with their immigration cases has little precedent.” True in the narrowest sense. False given how the history of slavery and peonage roars through each part of this story.

I place a lot of value on viewpoint diversity (the real one) and on free speech (the real one). It sucks how both concepts have been hijacked to mean “everyone is under a moral obligation to elevate and disseminate discredited claims if today’s political right is into them.”

I don’t think a good definition of “viewpoint diversity” is “you must lower your standards specifically for anti-science, anti-truth, bigots, and fascists — a healthy intellectual community needs those voices and they can’t clear the bar otherwise.”

Democrats should be unafraid in saying that Roberts on the Court is comparable to Mike Johnson in the House and John Thune in the Senate. They're all in thrall to Trump.

everyone needs to care about how the Roberts Court is actively, but quietly, helping Trump enact his agenda. We are in a separation of powers fight, a fight for constitutional meaning, and a fight with the conservative politicians on the corrupt Court.

start bulldozing the ballroom on day one, dare the court to enjoin you, and make clear that if they do enjoin you, you will use the double standard to openly accuse them of complicity in Trump’s criminal cult of personality and call for the institution’s complete gutting on that basis

I will never forgive Trump's quislings for treating our allies worse than our enemies. Every one of these stunts is a betrayal. We *had* a good trade deal with Canada, it was called NAFTA. Trump replaced it with...a basically identical deal (USMCA) and now tore that up too. Infuriating.

There are going to be Democrats who say we shouldn’t rip it all out — it’s already built, we have other priorities — but removing the visible signs of Trumpism is absolutely necessary.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.

Correct. The White House was deliberately designed to NOT be a palace. Early Americans defined their country AGAINST European monarchies.

This is a really excellent item from @brianbeutler.bsky.social - correct on the electoral history, correct on the present. And yeah, it's entirely realistic for Dems to pass a democracy agenda in 2029 with fewer than 60 Senators, and pushing hard on that now is a good & inclusive thing to do.

You cannot appeal to rigorous academic standards and argue for the inclusion of racist pseudoscience, the most fallacious, damaging, and discredited idea of the past 500 years. You might as well teach doctors to recognize the four humors.

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.
