“Disappeared” is how Argentines and Chileans talk about the citizens kidnapped by military regimes of 80s and 90s. Today Mexicans use it to refer to those who vanish in the cartel war. “Disappear” is a verb, noun & adj: When ppl are disappeared, they become los desaparecidos—the disappeared

We gotta find better ways to describe these arrests, man. "Detained" ain't cutting it. Getting your car window busted out and getting dragged away isn't "detained." Getting stopped on the street and disappeared for writing an OpEd isn't getting "detained." The language needs to match the action here

While it's very politically on-brand for an Anarcho-Syndicalist to be posting Rudolf Rocker, this passage of his has been playing in my head a lot recently, for obvious reasons.

A Quote from Rudolf Rocker's 'Anarcho-Syndicalism: Theory & Practice', 1947. Quote begins: 'Political rights do not originate in parliaments, they are, rather, forced upon parliaments from without. And even their enactment into law has for a long time been no guarantee of their security. Just as the employers always try to nullify every concession they had made to labor as soon as opportunity offered, as soon as any sign of weakness were observable in the workers' organisations, so governments also are always inclined to restrict or abrogate completely rights and freedoms that have been achieved if they imagine that the people will put up no resistance. Even in those countries where such things as freedom of the press, right of assembly, right of combination, and the like have long existed, governments are constantly trying to restrict those rights or to reinterpret them by juridical hair-splitting. Political rights do not exist because they have been legally set down on a piece of paper, but only when they have become the ingrown habit of a people, and when any attempt to impair them will be met with the violent resistance of the populace. Where this is not the case, there is no help in any parliamentary Opposition or any Platonic appeals to the constitution'.

Unimaginably disturbing that people from one country are being sent to a prison 'you don't come out of' in a completely different country by the government of a country they were living in. And people were warning from the start of The War on Terror that this would happen!

The reason that we have due process is that the authoritarians who don't care about that type of stuff are also not especially picky about targeting the "right" people.

In 1933, center right politicians not too different from Schumer decided to voluntarily give Hitler power of Chancellor, and later complete dictatorial power of the country. They believed that giving Hitler unlimited power would weaken his political standing, somehow. They never held power again.

Schumer tells me Republicans might try to jam Democrats again in September, but thinks Trump will be less popular then and Republican appropriators might be more willing to stand up to him. He said they refused to do so now.

BREAKING: Hundreds of Jews and allies have taken over Trump Tower chanting “We want justice, you say how. Bring Mahmoud home now!” and “Fight Nazis, not students.” The civil disobedience is spawned by the ICE arrest of Palestinian student Mahmoud Khalil.

The same law used to justify Japanese internments during WWII, among many, many other abuses. Usually ‘justified’ (to bend that word to breaking point) by the US being at war with someone. Which raises the obvious question: just who does the Trump regime think it’s at war with?

BREAKING via CNN: “The Trump administration is expected to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a sweeping wartime authority, in the coming days. The move is designed to speed up the president’s mass deportation pledge.”

one great mystery of our age is how the only way to motivate rich people to work is to give them loads of money for no reason but the only way to motivate poor people to work is to take away loads of their money for no reason

The disappearing of Mahmoud Khalil, a person with permanent legal status in the US, should be a red line that everyone should recognize. They knocked on his door and vanished him into an authoritarian system without a trace. Your door could be next. jaredyatessexton.substack.com/p/so-it-begi...

So It Begins: The Disappearing of Mahmoud Khalil and Authoritarian Capture

The Trump Administration kidnapped a legal permanent resident and shuffled him through an authoritarian maze. We're witnessing the beginnings of something terrifying

Figure skating world championships were considered to be for men only until 1902, when Madge Syers showed up and took home silver and the ISU went "whooooops guess we need to segregate them." It happened again in 1992 Olympic skeet shooting: Zhang Shan took gold and then they segregated the event.

Figure skater Madge Syers, doing a one-foot glideZhang Shan, Olympic gold medalist in skeet shooting, pictured wearing goggles and with several, uh, shotgun casings? in the air in front of her. Look, I know figure skating words for the most part but not skeet shooting ones.

I could have picked one of the pictures of her with her gun but the ones without Getty copyright on them were all potato-quality, and also I probably would have used the wrong gun word there too.

A reminder that women’s sports are kept separate from men’s not to protect women from always losing to men, but rather to ensure that no man ever loses to a woman. I’m not making this up; that’s literally the reason.
