short fiction is so good and yet beloved by so few. everyone should read a short story a day. i set a goal to read a hundred this year because I like measurables and i've been slacking, and now i'm up to #317, which still doesn't feel like enough.

We're still pushing away at our goal of giving our entire team a raise in celebration of our 20th anniversary issue in October. Each subscription takes us one step closer. clarkesworldmagazine.com/subscribe/ There isn't a better way to thank them for their part in the last 20 and the next 20.

As someone who isn’t “well known” in the writing community, doesn’t have the most publications, and probably doesn’t come off as a very strong writer, I am always terrified magazines might view what I send as poor AI writing and easily dismiss it. I trust every place I send my writing to +

Massive power outage due to storms where I live. Might be days before it’s fixed. Definitely can’t do something like stay in a hotel or something until resolve. Very not great situation for a lot of reasons :/

It’s pub day for the WOMEN OF THE WEIRD WEST Anthology, an imaginative, multicultural collection of weird wild west stories! My story “How To Kill A Yaoguai” is in here, inspired by Chinese immigrants in the 1800s and the women who were often trafficked to the so-called “new world."

Women of the Weird West cover featuring a backdrop of dusty escarpments/clouds/blue sky, overlaid with a set of fanged teeth.

"Ride into the unexpected" is written over the top, "Edited by KC Grifant" on the bottom.

An interesting warning for writers: There have been ads, making their rounds on social media, advertising writing contests with large prizes. Beware-- some of these contests are tricks to get you to submit files that will then be used to train AI models (LLMs). READ THE FINE PRINT!
