There is finally a potential for a hurricane or strong tropical cyclone east of North America — but it’s in the Mediterranean. There’s been a growing signal among ensembles for a medicane, or subtropical/tropical cyclone in the Mediterranean, that may develop this week.

The core of Lowell is expected to near or just west of Niihau tonight and early Tuesday. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau, and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Oahu.

During the ongoing eruption of #Krakatau in Indonesia, 10-minute JMA Himawari-9 True Color RGB images today showed a broad lower-altitude area of volcanic ash (shades of brown) along with pulses of higher-altitude volcanic clouds (a mixture of water vapor, ash and SO2).
