If we were told how much benefit our country collectively gets from people making stuff up out of their heads, a truly socially mobile option, we wouldn’t know our proper place. It’s why they’ve made the arts almost impossible to pursue for ordinary people. Get back on your trawler, prole scum.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

A year on from me starting it, I complete my list of 101 TTRPGs I played before my 50th birthday. How did you spend your birthday? I bet it wasn't doing your work and then hammering out 3.5k words about the chatgames with funny dice (or no funny dice, or no dice.) #ttrpg

Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

As I've mentioned ad nauseum, I've spent my summer writing up the foresight review on safe adoption of AI in engineering that I've been working on for the past year (will be published in December). At the heart of it are some observations about AI safety culture (which is the hottest of hot messes)

And otherwise, I think we should all remember that companies like Anthropic are choosing to continue making technologies they believe to be dangerous and putting them to market with insufficient QA processes to understand their capabilities.

Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie's "This is Information" from the 2002 9/11 Tribute Anthology comic is one of my favorite comics ever – its metaphorical approach to narrative had a profound influence on my comics making. I share bits of it in class frequently, but worth revisiting on this day...

At least two moments during last night’s watching of Furious made me punch the air at the quality of the writing. It’s not a police procedural; it’s a series of two-handers where characters surprise and delight you in combination. Every relationship is rinsed completely for truth. A masterclass.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.
