Has anyone ever used a Gallium source FIB to cut trenches + pillars in olivine crystals and if so can I get the details of the energy, the time etc it takes? #geology #thermofisher #zeiss #tescan #desperate 😂

From who has been allowed to conduct science, whom we imbue with the title of expert, what kinds of knowledge we consider valid, why we do science, and how science has been applied (and misapplied) throughout history, it’s a misnomer to assert that science has ever been apolitical.
Excite!!!
It's about time I announced a project that I've been working on in the last year... I wrote a book! 'Volcanoes: 10 things you should know' published by @orionbooks.bsky.social Seven Dials will be out in September. It's available to pre-order now. Links: linktr.ee/volcanologist
Not sure how I feel about "never give up" being our new #Lionesses slogan.....my blood pressure can't take it. Also I'm never going to complain about a running injury ever again 💀 #LucyBronze #UNIT

Got to love a pumice texture compilation slide! The Hunga-Tonga eruption has inspired some great work, so much has been on display already this week. #IAVCEI2025

Some inspiring work already this morning in the #indigenous knowledge and geoheritage co-session! #IAVCEI2025 (and in the only air-conditioned room!)
We found that AI tools - both general like #ChatGPT and research-specific like #Elicit - lack the reliability, relevancy and accuracy to summarise research for teachers. This is important because we have been sold the idea that AI will make research more accessible.
I am delighted to announce that my new paper with @darrenmacey.bsky.social is now published, entitled 'All sizzle, no steak: AI tools are not able to act as credible knowledge brokers by summarising evidence in mathematics education' bsrlm.org.uk/wp-content/u...

Writing is hard because the process of getting something onto the page helps us figure out what we think—about a topic, a problem or an idea. If we turn to AI to do the writing, we’re not going to be doing the thinking either. (Rosenzweig 2023)

A group of Labour MPs, peers and supporters write: “We should legislate to root out DEI in hiring practices, sentencing decisions and wherever else we find it in our public bodies.” Devastated to see how quickly this has arrived in the UK mainstream. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
cc: people who are still using "preferred pronouns" also. They are just pronouns, like anyone else's. Sticking "preferred" on communicates additional, confusing information; these aren't suggestions.
I think I'm definitely done with EDI talks that refer to "people that identify as men/women" instead of just saying "men and women", the underlying implication that "identify as women" that some of those people might not actually be women is just not something I'm willing to accept anymore.
I talked about all of the costs in class, ecological and intellectual, and my students were really great and I wish I could teach them again
I struggle with the reporting on ChatGPT in education because it often confirms society’s negative bias against young people—oh no, this generation is unsaveable!—when it’s possible to just educate people to be less credulous about it. which is why I wrote this: so teachers could print and assign it

On the other site, Studio Ghibli-style AI output is going viral and allow me to just say it is profoundly depressing to see that stuff being used to promote OpenAI's latest product. Miyazaki famously called AI-produced art "an insult to life itself"—and this in turn is an insult to him.
