‘Social media bans are likely to make things worse’: psychologist Candice Odgers on kids, tech and mental health
‘Social media bans are likely to make things worse’: psychologist Candice Odgers on kids, tech and mental health
She has studied adolescent mental health for 25 years and fears the debate obscures some of the biggest issues facing teenagers – from the impact of Covid to the health of their adult caregivers

The moral panic is so focussed on how the internet and social media is damaging children, but no one wants to have the discussion about how it is damaging fully grown adults, parents, grandparents.
The rollout of high speed internet in Uruguay worsended early childhood development. But not because the kids spent too much time in front of screens, because the parents did. cepr.org/voxeu/column...
There could be a world where AI chat bots are a safe space to explore kinks without shame and provide real joy and catharsis for curious people. Obviously we don’t like in that world but I think its the best use case for chatbots I’ve heard
For users with taboo desires, AI sexbots can promise freedom from shame—or it might go haywire and kink shame. Are robots ready for our kink? The answer: no.
witnessing the birth of a new all timer post is such a beautiful thing
Real talk I hope Vince Gilligan and David Duchovny know how many suicides they prevented with these two lines of dialogue

This is so random? What next ‘asylum seekers banned from shopping at M&S’?
🚨 NEW: The Government has banned asylum seekers from being housed in new-build homes

People are saying Starmer won't leave much of a legacy but I think that's nonsense frankly The UK was officially declared a country of trans genocide by the Lemkin Institute under his tenure

New: Allies of Andy Burnham are preparing to welcome him with a ‘mini-rally’ in Westminster this afternoon Starmer expected to resign before that, after Peter Kyle acknowledged the PM was considering the "political realities" this weekend observer.co.uk/news/the-sen...
Andy Burnham plans ‘mini-rally’ in Westminster as Starmer...
Most of the PM’s supporters appear to have finally deserted him – whereas 201 MPs are believed to have backed Burnham for leader

Girl same! I also feel betrayed by Labour!
🚨 NEW: A Labour source says Keir Starmer feels "betrayed" "He gave everything to Labour, including sacrificing much of his children's teenage years to help make the party electable. He feels deeply betrayed, especially by those he believed were loyal to him"
Anyone writing their thinkpieces about how burnham united the left is lost in columnist-brain: Starmer “united the left” at the general election, but it wasn’t passionate support, he was simply the least worst option.
Suspect this is accurate. Burnham, Streeting et al aren't going to diverge dramatically from Starmer's hostility towards marginalised communities. Without a major u turn, scrapping the current raft of inhumane policies, and ditching those who pushed them, Labour is toast regardless of who is leader
During the campaign Burnham explicitly said he supported Shabana Mahmoods incredibly restrictive immigration plans but go off Camilla
Labour won by 20 points and net immigration is down by over 80% in two years. But sure write your column again.
They’re calling it the quote on British politics that ended the need for all other quotes

I don’t have strong views on the u16 social media ban but if these platforms are so harmful, why does the govt still use them for comms? Likewise, while kids (and everyone else!) should be encouraged to socialise in-person, they now have far fewer options following brutal cuts to youth services
the government are taking tough action to stop any daughter of yours going out dressed like THAT
the government should ban under-16s from talking back to their parents
Is the Microsoft Office Ribbon causing people to have fewer children? A provocative new working paper explores the persistent drop in birth rates since Office 2007 was introduced nearly two decades ago.
This is besides the point but I don’t think the Prime Minister should ever be delivering news wearing something that is done up by a zip
'We are clamping down on the harm caused by social media. 'Read all about it on the Nazi pogrom deepfake abuse website'
Tbf it is actually wild that chatbots that can simulate sexual relationships weren’t already only for 18+, but you do not under any circumstances have to hand to Starmer for that one
Am I the only one who remembers not being allowed to go outside and socialise as a child because my parents were convinced I would immediately be abducted? Like being on the computer was the only solution
The solution they’ve proposed is more invasive age verification requirements for everyone so if you don’t have a valid ID I guess you’re not responsible enough to handle that YouTube makeup tutorial
Evidence from Australia six months after implementing its "total ban" on young people accessing social media indicated that SEVENTY PERCENT of young people were evading it. SEVENTY PERCENT. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06...
