sports is a valuable convivial activity, especially for peer socialization. the problem is hyper-competitive monetization, particularly parents over-investing in youth sports as an avenue for social mobility at the end of the day that old cliche is right--its not about winning its about having fun

Between the gambling and the anti-trans bullshit, alone, it might be time to have real hard thinky-think about why we even do sports
I do see how zoomers could be confused by Millennial Hope but, I assure you, it is not and never was optimism. Millennial Hope is 1)remembering a world before the Patriot Act & Active Shooter Drills, 2)owning the long version of LOTR, and 3)sheer stubborn spite that we will not go down w/o a fight.
Just had to go search up the phrase "Millenial Optimism" because, being an Elderly Millennial, I had no idea there was such a thing. It appears to be a conspiracy theory along the lines of Ancient Aliens or an urban legend like the American Dream.
That Firefox and Mapquest are going all-in on being anti-AI, anti-data tracking, and, in Mapquest's case, at least, anti-fascism says all you need to know about how public sentiment is shifting.

Sitting on my couch in tears, trying to understand why I feel so awful even though my life is objectively, breathtakingly beautiful, and a little voice in my head rasps out, in the broadest Rhode Island accent imaginable, "BOSS, THE FASCISM."
I'm fully on board for generic halloween/fall festival church carnivals! I think they're great. Would that more churches did block parties!
I think it’s obnoxious as a replacement for trick or treating, but as a generic Halloween carnival (which is what the ones here have become), it’s fine. My kids go play in the bounce house and have fun
The existence of "trunk or treat" should be a call for us to rethink how we got to a place in our culture where we long for an experience no longer broadly available (if it ever was!). Instead? We ensure the facsimile of this ritual is accessible. Kind of like sub-prime mortgages, for kids.
It hollows out the core of trick or treating--experiencing the mix of fear and community that comes from wandering around your neighborhood at dark. Which...is an experience not safe or good for everyone! But this inaccessibility is an indictment on the gulf between American lives & nostalgia.
I feel this. I feel like it is a solution to a problem (making trick or treat more accessible to people for whom traditional trick or treating is inaccessible), that has expanded to accommodate a lot of anxieties we have about our children (many well-founded, some unfounded).
Basically, I think Trunk or Treat teaches people, or encourages them to lean into, in most contexts the worst kind of "stranger danger" fear of neighbors that is corrosive of community and often grounded in entirely Urban Legend level dangers associated with Halloween.
For the record, the Bible is full of people praying for their enemies. To die. That's like half the book of Psalms. So if you need any ideas how to phrase this request it makes an excellent reference.
In fact, next time someone is clearly wrong, try telling them "I'll pray for you" in a condescendingly sweet tone. Actually mean it. Actually do it.
All I'm saying is there are some people I pray for regularly. Mostly that they will rapidly receive the memory care unit attention they so obviously need, complete with location tracker. Praying over someone =/= supporting them and can be an absolutely passive aggressive move.
"i have made machines conscious!" "you fucked up a perfectly good piece of software is what you did. look at it. it’s got anxiety."
When i was little I was in a small town, and literally every kids sports team was coed. Girls would regularly outperform boys, and nobody died. Literally it was fine.
It’s incredible the things you don’t realize are sacred until you can no longer rely on them
As usual, you can in fact blame capitalism.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Be back next week folks!
"The prisoner's dilemma will never iterate, and they will never be able to choose defection. I am very smart and also morally good"
this too is managerial politics btw. "i can browbeat anyone into doing anything but if you quit i'm going to whine and cry and tell you that you're being so unfair to me" - middle management ass political party. pathetic stuff
everyone has a line over which they won't vote straight ticket D or R. if you keep stepping over the line for some people while giving them big sloppy wino winks, eventually they might stop playing along - that's on you, that's coalition management. clean it up or quit whining
you have to have trust if you want a coalition to take some Ls for you. dems have undermined trust w trans people by maintaining a basically limitless permission structure to play footsie with eliminationist transphobia even in very blue states. going "but it's just a few people" doesn't change that
also obviously this is just wrong. clinton signed DOMA, DADT was implemented in the wake of AIDS both forcing the conversation about gay people and literally decimating gay men, the argument straightforwardly wasn't about youth segregation and the other side weren't yet full bore fascists
it helps to read replies sometimes. easier to understand what someone's actually arguing if you realize they think MLK was wrong about white moderates because LBJ signed the civil rights act
Hey friends! I had a pair of unexpected large expenses this month with a minor car accident and an unexpected pet fee from my landlord. Now, I can afford both of these expenses, but it's gonna be tight. I'm trying to raise the $550 to patch the hole in my month's budget. My venmo is @Bill-Eldridge.
