I think it is remarkable to the extent the opposition party is still largely silent about the extrajudicial gulag archipelago that the sitting administration is using to turn innocent immigrants into political prisoners and slaves in third nations

CORRECTION: After looking at the flight data a little closer, there were SIX third-country removals, with an additional stop in Equatorial Guinea -- where migrants already trapped there say officials are beating them and threatening them at gunpoint.

Welp, here it is: the bit of bluesky Discourse™ that is going to drive me fully around the bend. Rare != important. No one is ripping irreplaceable manuscripts out of the hands of antiquarians. Buying books in bulk is not a nefarious activity. You can do it yourself if you like: booksbythefoot.com

…well, this should be fun. It’s probably everyone telling me how awesome and correct my opinions are and also I’m extremely attractive, right?

Three episodes into Ted Lasso S4 and I cannot easily express how much I miss Anthony Stewart Head. This show really needed an antagonist for the characters to bounce off of, and minus that there's shockingly little left other than rote cringe comedy.

1991, early October. I’m in the passenger seat of a car driving back to Philly from my college in western MA. Jason, the driver, pulls a cassette tape out from his bag and says “Listen. This is IMPORTANT” and slots it in. Which is how I heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time.

Do you have any striking moments of hearing a song for the first time? I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard a milli (shitfaced at a college party naturally but I remember everything about it due to the momentousness of experiencing a milli)

fucked up that polymarket is a dystopian tech company rather than a place you go to buy fresh produce from the local farmer and her three boyfriends

Okay you wastrels. There was a household miscommunication and I am now in possession of a bottle of _sweet_ white vermouth. Other than I guess just pouring it over ice or making very pale Negronis, what on earth should I do with this?

Today's transit thread: The time the LIRR tried out faregates and magnetic fare cards. It was 1964, all three commuter lines are in varying amounts of trouble. NY State was on the verge of buying the LIRR and attempting -- with Conn, RI and Mass -- to rescue the commuter portions of the NH&H.

You see this with drug testing in sports as well: cycling and MLB, which took testing/crackdowns on PEDs seriously, got a rep as “dirty,” especially to a US audience; the NFL/NBA, who take a more relaxed view, manage to avoid the stigma entirely.

I kind of depressingly think that a downside of openness is that large swathes of the population are basically incapable of really modeling selection bias in their head, and so countries and institutions that make some effort at accountability and transparency look 'worse' to them.

A massive crisis is developing in the west over dwindling water. You are going to hear a lot of bullshit. Just remember this: The solution is to stop growing animal feed & vegetables in the desert. That’s it. That’s all we have to do. Just grow stuff that needs water where it rains on the regular.

The ag lobby really, really, really, really, really, really, really wants you to think AI is the reason reservoirs are going empty. It's not. It's agriculture.

My dad ended up at a strip club with his friends after game six of the 1991 World Series. They got a drink and were confused why nobody was dancing, then they looked up to the VIP lounge where ZZ Top was drinking champagne out of the bottle, surrounded by every stripper working.
