some words are objectively hurtful and objectively dangerous in a way that passes any but the most gaslighty of tests and it is perfectly fine for a democratically elected government to use its mandate to render them unsayable without consequence

This stuff needs a robust structural response: heavy fines and other sanctions on these platforms, external review of police stations who fail to enforce protective orders. I know I'm part of this but I think there's too much focus on "men reflecting on their behaviour". We need more regulation.
The striking thing about the manosphere is how unregulated it is: the stalking, the podcasts who platform proven abusers, the algorithms pushing the hate, all of it. The silence or the impotence or the indifference of the institutions who have the power to affect it. The rot is so, so thorough.
Good question, but the premise that Marc Rutte ever had any moral principles is wrong. He first became prime minister with the support of Geert Wilders. This is who he is.
WOW -- Danish reporter *goes there* with Rutte "You sit next to Trump when he talks about conquering Greenland, lashes out at allies like Spain -- things it doesn't seem like the old Mark Rutte would approve of. Does this have any affect on your self-respect when you sit there and say nothing?"
time to ask FIFA if FIFA bylaws still apply and if so when US soccer will be suspended like Pakistan was for trying to interfere with the game
I'm still furious btw. Eject this banana republic from international competition. Nothing of value will be lost. #USABEL
They were booing every Belgian pass in the beginning, but now the crowd can't even bring themselves to boo an obvious time-wasting dive. I'm loving it. #USABEL
lol can't even kick the ball out from kickoff #USABEL
Do you reaaaaaaally think that the victims of Leopold II, presuming they gave a shit about the world cup at all, would currently be rooting for the country of President Jim Crow As Farce
Statement from the Belgian FA pointing out that the appeals process is a scam so FIFA can keep their decision but pretend that there was a fair ruling. www.rbfa.be/en/news/upda...
FIFA has how made up some kind of insane appeal process and could rescind the Balogun red card recension no notes www.nytimes.com/athletic/742...
Look if you think it’s fine for Trump to corruptly get a red card revoked (or “suspended”) bc FIFA is already corrupt, maybe you understand the MAGA mindset better than you think. “All politicians are corrupt so it’s ok for Trump to be corrupt” is a very common maga rationalization
Has blown my mind how many Americans who rightly saw FIFA as a corrupt organization and Trump as such and a bully, have now gone, that if it works in their favor then it’s actually a kind of good. FIFA isn’t even saying the red card was wrong, they simply moved the suspension to satisfy the US.
I'm sorry but all this post reveals is that even a liberal American can contain dangerous quantities of Trump particles.
If other countries are pissed about Balogun's red card being lifted, they can stayed pissed. Wanting to punish a 25-year-old who did nothing wrong and has carried himself well just because you're angry at Trump and FIFA is weak sauce.
It will never not be funny to me that the Chinese title of ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ 憤怒的葡萄 is shaped exactly like the Chinese name for Angry Birds 憤怒的小鳥.
Imagine if, after training to be an electrician for 8 years, the electrical union held a battle royale where 9/10 apprentices had their hands severed This is what I mean when I say academia was fascist-shaped even before the fascists came into power
as it's been the case for decades now that a vast majority of grad students would spent their lives training for university employment they never would receive, in a very real way the system was already dancing with death drive, and this is why it's easy now for the right to "finish it off"
there was a *big* switch on this around 2011, when they effectively killed off climate denialism - previously a reasonably strong minority view inside party circles and among the public, premised on the notion that it was a Western conspiracy to block China's rise foreignpolicy.com/2017/05/31/t...

strange for an argument ostensibly railing against orientalism also to claim that mass executions are quintessentially "Chinese" 😬
If reality matched Dante's imagination, Paul Erlich has just started a life of eternal damnation in a crammed room without food, together with Thomas Malthus and other racist famine apologists.
Impossible to overestimate the damage this guy caused. His book was based on a laughably false premise and the movement he inspired led immigration crackdowns and forcible sterilization campaigns. Glad the population got one Ehrlich smaller today.
"The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate..." Paul Ehrlich.
"Note the stupid paradox sitting at the center of the AI hype right now. We are told AI models will soon destroy the need for knowledge work of any sort. That’s bullshit, of course, but if it *were* true, why bother training teachers to 'use AI responsibly?' Why even bother to have teachers?"

A thread on Eileen Gu’s nationality status. It’s often reported that China “bans” dual nationality. That’s not quite true. But the rules are confusing and the actual implementation is constantly changing. 🧵
US-born Two-time Olympic gold medalist skier Eileen Gu defended her decision to once again represent China at the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.
Fundamentally Americans need to grasp that if they don't fix this, and by fix this I mean not only remove him from power but organisationally destroy his party forever, Europe will simply never be a reliable partner to them again.
Trying to remember who was the Oxford economist who proposed (about 25 years ago) that each individual's appetite for risk is down to the fact that we all subconsciously have pre-cognitive knowledge of the date of our deaths?
