"It’s not a different opinion. It’s straight up bigotry ... that we wouldn’t accept or hand wave away if it were targeted towards any other group." Every cis person who follows me for WNBA content better read this. Pay for a sub, you owe the trans community that much & Frankie is a hell of a writer

This is rough but I think it talks about a lot of what is missing from the Cunningham/WNBA discourse. Namely, that trans people are not hypothetical thought experiments. They are real people who are being genocided by our government & any coverage that doesn't center that reality misses the mark.

I was banned by BlueSky (then apparently unbanned) for calling for the trial & death penalty for Ralph de la Torre, former CEO of Steward Health Care, a man directly responsible for the deaths of disabled Americans. I stand by my analysis - the full writeup is here: www.patreon.com/mattbc/posts...

It's amazing. Matthew is a lawyer, their argument is well-reasoned and measured, asking why the death penalty is applied to those who lack power, rather than to people who cause massive, irreparable harm. But it's always easier to pretend a challenging premise is a call to violence, huh, bluesky.

Gonna be a lot of talk about how Kelsey Plum may be the missing piece the veteran #PHX side need to make another playoff run… and they’d be right. BUT don’t sleep on AT 👑👑👑who is the undisputed triple-double queen of the #wnba I believe that’s a career number 21? 👸🏿👸🏿👸🏿

The fourth multi-triple-double night in WNBA history. All four have been Alyssa Thomas + X. #WNBA

If I was a prominent player in the #WNBA, and people were trying to tie me to something that seriously opposed my values and who I am as a person, there would not be enough microphones for me to yell into denouncing that. There would be no “middle of the road” stance. Just a thought.

On point. It’s all about policing women and womanhood. Anti-trans rhetoric is inherently anti-women.

Right-wing provocateurs understand that the data is not on their side - but a
popular belief on their side is that women's sports are teeming with transgender individuals solely because many women athletes do not have the
"look" of a woman.
Someone needs to tell Cunningham that women who are not transgender are subject to being labeled as trans if they do not exude a hegemonically
"feminine" look. Brittney Griner and Lauren Betts are textbook examples of this. In fact, tall women across the board receive this flack and the WNBA is full of tall women.
In short - being anti-trans is one of the biggest examples of being anti-woman because it puts pressure on women to have to adhere to beauty standards (many of which are set by men who do not even like women, emotionally) as opposed to being their true selves.
And if being a supposed warrior on behalf of women's sports (and women in general) is Cunningham's aim, that is very short-sighted too. As we have pointed out on several occasions, the biggest threat to women's sports is not the trans community - it is misogynistic men.

In my latest at #BeyondTheW, I look at the Sophie Cunningham anti-trans controversy from all angles...including how she's clearly setting herself up for life after #WNBA and how much of this is actually counter-productive. @loirabtw.bsky.social beyondthew.com/wnba-indiana...
