Merlin is brilliant even if you don't want to go looking for birds. The sound ID feature is great even if you can't see (or don't want to go find) birds you are hearing. This was part of the IDs for a 20 minute walk here last spring. Only actually saw 1 or 2. Highly recommend

today i met Acharia stimulea, the saddleback moth. i thought damn that was an unusually sharp corn leaf when the wind brushed it against my shoulder and it stung like hell. when it grazed the inside of my arm i went no what the actual fuck. this guy. this guy is the actual fuck

A saddleback moth caterpillar. Light brown, about an inch long, with two pointy horns at both ends, lots of feathery little legs, a huge green band in the middle with a brown oval in the center. the green is edged with white, and it has two white dots on both ends between the horns. Cute little bastard.

New: ICE plans to spend millions of dollars on Boston Dynamics dog robots. ICE says this is to improve "officer safety." This is a longstanding problem with the Times specifically. All the legacy papers have really taken to yoinking independent journalists’ work with zest, though, and with so many pubs opening specifically to cover culture it sucks to see papers eliminating culture coverage and just stealing ours.
