That doesn't work, because it hits the same problem as parking in Amsterdam: if you're rich enough you can just buy your way out of the problem. Amsterdam's still choked with cars and making SUVs more expensive just makes them more of a status symbol. They need to be banned, not just taxed.

and outside of nudge-nudge approaches: we could also ban SUVs. make them into an additional class of vehicle which you need a seperate licence for. unless you live on a farm or somewhere remote, you can't own one.

One of the deep cultural and policy differences between Ireland and England (not UK) is the punitive, often borderline or actually abusive secondary school system run by privatised 'trusts' with no local control. To an Irish person it really feels like a government that hates/fears its children.
