By Hannah Saunders Beginning on August 12, over 140 immigrants who are being detained at Tacoma's Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) have gone on a hunger strike to demand humane treatment, including healthy food with protein and medical attention for sick people, particularly those with diabetes. Many people with diabetes rely on the hormone, insulin, and Type 1 Diabetics can die within 24-72 hours without insulin.

If you support any kind of automatic law enforcement, you're not my friend. I don't give a fuck about the public safety benefits of e.g. license plate cameras cameras or in-car speed limiters or automatic tax audits, they're invasive and anti-social.

Yikes: The Stranger made a classic amateur-hour mistake in its supreme court election results writeup, reporting only King County (Seattle-area) results in statewide races. The statewide results are completely different, which makes their analysis inaccurate. Amazing that no one there caught this.

Justice Land: By now, we’ve all hopefully internalized the gospel about this year’s unprecedented Washington State Supreme Court races. Four races were on the primary ballot, and a fifth race will be on the November ballot. The initial ballot drop showed the conservative, anti-tax candidates behind across the board. In the race for State Supreme Court, Position 1, Colleen Melody, the Gov. Bob Ferguson-appointed former head of the Civil Rights Division at the Attorney General’s office, held a solid 64 percent of the vote. Anti-tax lawyer Scott Edwards and his 22 percent will make it through the primary. The Position 3 race has both good guys winning: Court of Appeals judge Mike Diaz in the lead with 42 percent and former ACLU legislative strategy director Jaime Hawk close behind with 33 percent, knocking out Antonin Scalia fan David Stevens. The Position 5 race is interesting. Ferguson-appointed civil rights lawyer Theo Angelis is winning with 45 percent. But Thurston County Superior Court Judge Sharonda Amamilo and Project 42 conservative darling Dave Larson are neck-and-neck for second, at 22.9 percent and 21.5 percent, respectively. And in Position 7, incumbent Debra Stephens is trouncing a rogue’s gallery of conservative chuckleheads. Clearly, Washington does not want a conservative referendum on its judicial branch.
