Burien politics, cats, and other nonsense.
We need more communities to reduce light pollution for birds and for sky watchers. The recent meteor shower was so beautiful. Let’s support darker skies everywhere.
An @theurbanist.org exclusive: the City of North Bend developed a plan to build 40 units of workforce housing directly in its historic downtown. Then the project quietly fell apart, thanks in large part to opposition over its scale and perceived lack of parking. www.theurbanist.org/how-north-be...
How North Bend's First Attempt to Build Workforce Housing Fell Apart
Just months after touting the idea of building 40 affordable units in downtown North Bend, City officials quietly pulled the plug. While a lack of financing is being blamed for the project's collapse,...

Over 140 immigrants detained in Tacoma’s Northwest Detention Center on hunger strike to demand humane treatment
By Hannah Saunders Beginning on August 12, over 140 immigrants who are being detained at Tacoma's Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) have gone on a hunger strike to demand humane treatment, including healthy food with protein and medical attention for sick people, particularly those with diabetes. Many people with diabetes rely on the hormone, insulin, and Type 1 Diabetics can die within 24-72 hours without insulin.

Burien is currently in a budget crisis and having to cut staff because we need $3M. This makes me queasy. www.epi.org/deportation-...
Instead of spending $3,195 per taxpayer, on mass deportations, what could Shoreline taxpayers have funded? How many Teachers and Nurses and how much Housing could have been funded in our city instead? The Economic Policy Institute has an app for that. www.epi.org/deportation-...

Tried to take a day off to hike to Grand Park… bad day for it. Heartbroken at this.

If this is “slop” policy, why did the retail association use my consumer data to to send me a text blast in opposition before the press release came out. If they’re not planning or already doing it, wouldn’t they shrug it off?
www.theurbanist.org/op-ed-police... Black folx aren't fighting and advocating for justice to run cover for a status-quo cop. We deserve better and so does Seattle.

It's almost as if more police are not the main answer to reducing gun violence.
NEW: Seattle Police had "increased staffing assigned to the Seattle Center and surrounding neighborhoods" on the July 26 Bite of Seattle shooting according to an SPD Incident Action Plan I obtained:
If you support any kind of automatic law enforcement, you're not my friend. I don't give a fuck about the public safety benefits of e.g. license plate cameras cameras or in-car speed limiters or automatic tax audits, they're invasive and anti-social.
Have done this myself in prior years but luckily only in my group chat and not in a publication 🫥
Yikes: The Stranger made a classic amateur-hour mistake in its supreme court election results writeup, reporting only King County (Seattle-area) results in statewide races. The statewide results are completely different, which makes their analysis inaccurate. Amazing that no one there caught this.
