All Her Lives - Ingrid Horrocks, 2025. Nine stories of women, across two centuries, spanning the globe & New Zealand. The stories are interwoven, names and places crop up again and again, making it feel almost like a family history, rather than a work of fiction. Award winning, and you can see why

If you know both yourself and the menu, you need never fear the results of a thousand dinner dates
The fundamental, delicious paradox of studying history is that: 1. These people are radically different from me, and I may never properly understand them. 2. These people are exactly like me.
one tendency that comes out about period films is the insistence that XYZ moral thought would not have occurred to anyone in the ancient world. to be sure there are moral innovations and changes but the existence of thorough dissatisfaction with the present moral order is not a modern phenomenon

Donald Trump says Middle East allies have reached outlines of deal to end Iran war
In a social media post, Trump claimed the parameters of a deal had been reached and that he would hold off on ordering new strikes in the five-month-old conflict for now.

ACT are deliberately targeting disabled children in this and other policies. ACT want to enact harm upon our kids, freely and without recourse. ACT want to siphon money to overseas profiteers via institutionalisation and prisons. They will leave the rest of us all the poorer for it.
Isekai as a genre is exploding in popularity because it appeals to a universal desire to get hit by a truck rather than live in the 21st century.
While obviously a 4.7 isn't a worrying quake most of the time, it is slightly confronting to realise you've just said to yourself "well, I'm not getting out of bed for anything short of a LEAST a 6"
The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah should not be sung at Christmas as a stand alone piece because it's from the Easter section of the work.
What is an extremely nerdy/obscure/specific thing you hate with a white-hot wrath?

A Parade of Horribles - Matt Dinniman, 2026. Its difficult to fault an author for reaching for the stars. Dinniman manages yet another rather readable book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and I find myself with few complaints
We were poor growing up so we had to buy abridged manga. I only got to read The Gist of The North Star
If everybody did this, even places where people can't mask effectively (restaurants, bars, etc.) would get safer for everyone because transmission would be lower overall. Audiences mask = performers are safer. Students mask = teachers are safer. We have fuckin' got to learn to help each other out.
This Inevitable Ruin - Matt Dinniman, 2024. Much the same as the previous books, which is hardly a bad thing. Certainly good enough to keep me reading.

One of my favourite things about learning about Collection Management is finding out exactly how much fucking arsenic we used to just Put In Things
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride - Matt Dinniman, 2023. More Dungeon Crawler Carl. Dinniman is doing a lot of building the world outside the dungeon in this one, and its paying off. As expected with the semiserial format, its ramped up the action compared to earlier instalments
To quote @seawall.horse, "Io: come for the constant volcanism, stay because Jupiter's radiation belt has killed you and you are now dead."
Every now and then I remember how good the Io photos we got from the Juno mission were. The dark gleam of the fresh lava lakes, the volcanic plumes visible on the limb and behind the terminator... weird little world!
Where I work, they've just changed the toilet paper company to Tork, which is, of course, Exactly the kind of thing I'm Tork-ing about
