For REAL. A good game designer isn't just a robot that intakes complaints and outputs solutions. Can you figure out a design change that enhances the game's goals and themes instead of harms them? Does the game NEED a design change? Or is this an aesthetic problem? Is this an AUDIENCE problem?

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

I don't disagree telling stories is amongst the functions of tabletop RPGs (though it's not the sole – or even *principal* – function of many), but I think a lot of analyses of story-in-RPGs trip over the GNS model's error of treating the activities of play as identical with the goals of play. Harlan Ellison once wrote of the innate hatred that machines hold for the weak, soft creatures who create them. I dunno if this was the sort of thing he had in mind, but I bet he'd consider himself proven right after one look at our house robots

see i think this is kind of emblematic of a particular confusion that makes discussing ttrpgs in general tricky. That is, conflating "the game-structures that exist in the books" and "the events that take place during play". Both get squished into the term 'game', but they're different things!

It's time for today's random #Netrunner card of the indefinite time period! Going back to the FFG era, Endless EULA is from the tail end of that run, The Devil And The Dragon set. Let's see what silliness NBN Intruder Countermeasure Electronics can get up to! This is a legacy/casual legal card, BTW.

The card art is a complicated digital interchange rendered as a series of square yellow knots on a red background.

Endless Eula is an Ice: Barrier card from NBN faction. It has 0 Strength, a rez cost of 6, and an influence value of 2. It has 6 repeated "End the run unless the Runner pays 1 credit" subroutines.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

I love dice rolls in videogames, I love the way they invite the player to narrate their experience in relation to unexpected events, I love their connections to the history of chance as a storytelling tool, I love the way they attack the player's tendency to want everything their own way.

I genuinely think that a lot of creative processing happens while waiting, like in a lineup or for a kettle to boil. I never noticed how much I was missing that until I started doing my ”offline” months. Doing nothing is very important!

People really do not appreciate the importance of the "do nothing" phase in the creative process. We are all about the kinetic energy, and forget its duality with potential energy.

I have a book coming out later this year! Roll on charts, do jobs, live life, write stories, and do all that other interesting stuff that happens before the first day of your fantasy adventure (and if it sells enough we'll do a sci fi one). Preorder now!
