Too many Ayrshires, not enough time. Half dairy farmer, half writer, all parent. Mostly cheese and kid stories.

I've told this story before and I suppose now it's time to do it again. When I was in 9th grade, my English teacher was the elderly sort of man who always wore a gray flannel suit and had a cigarette before class and a cigarette at the end of class every period.

It seems like assigned reading, especially summer reading, should include titles from different genres, with different tones, from different eras. (And as a former sulky Anne Rice-reading teen, I advocate for some over-the-top moodiness in the mix with realistic problem fiction and happier tales.)

My mom has declared war against Japanese Stilt Grass, a species best controlled by mowing, and she's been walking the fence row to hand-pull it near the neighbor's property... meanwhile, there's a wild grape vine growing up the back of her house, pokeweed in her ground cover, and burdock everywhere.

What I love about Bluesky is what I loved about old Twitter: if I want to find out about something (however recondite) there will be someone here (often with a PhD in it) and the time and patience to share their knowledge. /1

anyway, i’m at the point where people starting new substacks/remaining on substack really bums me out but can’t spend a ton of energy getting mad about it. bigger fish to fry and all. it just confuses me how so many continue to ignore the evidence of how much they suck.
