the answer to the iced coffee is that the interviewer should bring iced coffee for their prospective employee, or whatever drink preference they have because they should be good hosts and care about people and iced coffee would make it feel almost worth it in this hellscape of a job market.

A lot of people have used the argument that AI is here to stay so I should accept it as a tool in my life. If you accept destruction in the world because it is already here don’t be surprised when you face the consequences of that destruction.

I have the privilege of being able talk to and work in the field with environmental scientists and entomologist. People have asked why I feel so strongly against AI and it’s because I’m seeing it directly destroy the natural world I care about.

I’m gonna actually make a raffle where you can win 1 (small webiste page with max 3 subpages) of your idea. 📜 rules: 🟦 follow 🟦 repost 🟦 like Raffle will be closed at 30 sep. Every new 1000 followers there will be +1 winner. It will be good if you already have a domain. I will host your page.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

when you interact with an object or environment produced by people, every single part of it is downstream of active human choices. and that means they can be legislated. for example: we can make it illegal for chatbots to call themselves "i" and pretend to be a person. that is a deliberate trick.

Amy Hoy@amyhoy.bsky.social · 3mo ago

the big chatbots hide all of this from you INTENTIONALLY to create an illusion to fool you and that’s why i think consumer-facing chatbots should be illegal it is a DELIBERATE trick. they carefully crafted it to trick people. it’s not “how llms work.“ the secret nature of it is a choice

Absolutely horrific: Thanks to a false intelligence "generated with the help of artificial intelligence," the US military nearly carried out an operation aboard a Chinese ship because the incorrect intelligence said it was carrying nukes, according to @cnn.com. edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/p...

Exclusive: US military had close call after using AI for false intelligence report, sources say | CNN Politics

The episode shows the risks of using this new, relatively poorly understood technology in the middle of the Iran war

holy shit, this is the whole ballgame in a single paragraph gAI systems require mass theft of copyrighted works, for the explicit purpose of replacing the market for the people they stole from, and the people in charge knew what they were doing ahead of time, and did it anyway

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

if you learn a skill or start a new hobby, it makes you a better person, not worse. nobody ever gets into calligraphy and immediately starts screeching that typefaces are useless and only the quill shall prosper. there is no "woodworking psychosis" nobody thinks they're dating their kettlebell

If your reaction to these astoundingly complex programs surprising you is to conclude there must be a ghost in there, you should stay away from these LLMs. This isn’t a dunk. It’s bad to get collectively caught up in the feeling that maybe humanity isn’t real because the computer indexed your files

These models will make you think they understand your language and are responding to you with deliberation, but that‘s not what’s happening. If you can’t remember that’s not what’s happening despite how it feels while you’re interacting with them, you shouldn’t use them. They are dangerous to you

People need to find ways to support the Smithsonian. To signal to the country that Trump needs to keep his sticky, grabby, racist paws off all the institutions that mind our cultural and historical heritage. Tell your Congressional Reps and Senators: Hands off the Smithsonian!

Trump administration threatens to cut off agencies’ ties to Smithsonian By Jonathan Edwards Echoing White House attacks, an Interior Department letter threatened the institution “under current leadership” with loss of support for sourcing artifacts and more. @jonathanreports.bsky.social Gift link

I really feel like it should be bigger news that fibreglass is in IV saline bags in the US. This isn’t a situation where you might get a little sick. Fibreglass going directly into your veins will kill you. IV saline is used for almost every medical procedure. This is unconscionable:
