Listening to @add-hawk.bsky.social talk on @99pi.org whilst I'm cutting, laminating and assembling print & play boardgames this morning, fascinating to hear about achievement vs striving play, I love thinking about games and why they matter to us.

Played Compania again tonight & it is fast becoming one of my favourite euros. Really it is a 'euro with ameritrash characteristics'. Area control + worker placement + tableau building + simultaneous action selection. It's like Pirate's Cove, Terraforming Mars & Caverna had a transporter accident.

Played some more Here Lies tonight, along with squeezing in a learning game of Regular Human Climber - which is a co-op trick-taking game in which you are definitely a normal human and not four independent limbs trying to climb a rock wall without falling off #boardgames

Regular Human Climber. A selection of standees on a climbing wall - there are 4 limbs, a core, a brain and a hat with glasses and mustache. A standard deck of playing cards is being used for trick taking. Here Lies. A cloth mat detecting a skeleton has cards with arrows pointing at the head that say Lipstick and Crown. There are additional cards around the mat that provide key evidence such as 'A Sarcophagus' and 'Many Objects of Gold'

JinxO Wins 2026 Spiel des Jahres

On July 12, 2026, more than seven weeks after the Spiel des Jahres jury revealed the nominees for the three awards it manages, the jury revealed the winner of the 2026 Spiel des Jahres: Martin Ang's JinxO, which debuted in 2024 from Indonesian publisher Tabletoys Games, which Game Factory released in German as **_Dito!_** I reviewed _JinxO_ in July 2025 after getting a sample copy from the publisher at SPIEL Essen 24. It's a fabulous party game that's gone over wonderfully with both gamers and the most casual of game players. As I wrote in my review: "_JinxO_ isn't recreating the party game genre; it's 'just' a well-designed, familiar party game that delivers what you probably want in a party game: friendly time spent with others, with high-fives, fun discussions, and gentle disagreements sprinkled into the mix." The other two nominees for Germany's game of the year award were Cozy Stickerville by Corey Konieczka and Morty Sorty Magic Shop by Markus Slawitscheck. For the other two awards, Reiner Knizia's Rebirth from Mighty Boards won the 2026 Kennerspiel des Jahres award — the so-called expert's award — over Boss Fighters QR, co-designed by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach, and Moon Colony Bloodbath, designed by Donald X. Vaccarino. For an overview of _Rebirth_ , you can check out my review from 2024 — and if you already know the game and like it, during the SdJ ceremony Mighty Boards' David Chircop promised that more is coming This award "completes the cycle" for Reiner Knizia, who in 2008 won the Spiel des Jahres for Keltis and the Kinderspiel des Jahres for Whoowasit? ****Like this kind of board game coverage?**** Get Board Game Beat’s free posts by email — original reporting, designer interviews, and industry news, with no tracking, no ads, and no spam. Scorpion Masqué previously won the 2024 Spiel des Jahres for Luc Rémond's Sky Team, with Annick Lobet's Zombie Kidz Evolution having been nominated for Kinderspiel in 2020. The other two 2026 Kinderspiel nominees are Boo Party, co-designed by Florian Sirieix and Benoit Turpin, and Verflixt Verzaubert, designed by Thomas Dagenais-Lespérance. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Like what you read? Since there is a little trend I thought I would share my Patreon. I am moving towards being completely independent, buying all the games I review (not including the work I do for TTGM). Your support can help make that happen. www.patreon.com/c/thegiantbr...

I actually received a physical letter back from my MP to confirm that they signed EDM 240 to oppose the EHRC Code of Practice. I know this doesn't solve the problem, but if we keep putting pressure on, I can hope that we can change things for the better. Trans Rights! 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm so excited that the ColorJam Kickstarter page is LIVE! 🖍️ The goal is simple: "Color a nice picture." 🧩 The puzzle is elegant: satisfying for gamers, easy enough for kids. 🤔 But the experience is deep: What, really, is a "nice picture?" I would love if you followed along to learn more! 🩷💚🤎🩵💜💛
