a thing that gets on my nerves re the schools & lockdown thing is that there's dancing around the fact that the alternative would kill more people rather than explicitly arguing X number of deaths is unfortunately acceptable to prevent Y problems. But that IS your argument! And we all know it is.

To take the toughest question "were school closures worth doing?" The government did not want to do it, it was not a default response, and at least the first time it was against an apocalyptic backdrop. It was a choice that, as much as I hate him, Matt Hancock did not do lightly.

This is such a niche (and on brand) thing, but following the bye-elections in Ireland, and enjoying that they are "bye", not "by"; see also Constituency (UK, Ireland), District (US), Riding (Canada), Division (Australia), Electorate (New Zealand). One language, can't quite agree election terms.
