Happy Canada Day! Time to get worried about national unity and the coming referendum campaign. According to the weekly financial disclosures, federalists are getting absolutely creamed in fundraising. Separatists have raised 5x what federalists have. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/shannonp...

Happy Canada Day! Time to get worried.

Waiting for Alberta’s federalist Conservatives to get their act together for the referendum campaign is not a good idea. They don’t seem to know what they’re doing.

The Premier of Alberta intervened to lower the threshold for getting a separatist question on the ballot. She then intervened to eliminate a review requiring the question be constitutional. She intervenes again tonight after yet another court has told the separatists to slow down & follow the law. 🧵

Focusing on the one staffer makes sense for an opposition party trying to pin down the Premier on an issue that is becoming more difficult for her to dodge — but it misses the forest for the trees. I’m willing to bet that almost everyone on the Centurion Project zoom call is a UCP member.

"..the separatism debate won’t end with a referendum. . There is already a motion being proposed to adopt separatism as an official party policy at the UCP’s fall AGM. . Even if the separation referendum fails.. the UCP might still end up becoming an official separatist party by the end of 2026.."

Nobody ran on separatism. Or on lowering citizen initiative thresholds. Or on weakening Elections Alberta. Or having such a serious question be 1 of 10, added at the 11th hour. Albertans have been subjected to separatism by subterfuge.

One year ago I was first elected to serve the people of Calgary Confederation and it has been an incredible honour to serve my constituents and my country. It is also an incredible responsibility. 🧵

Today, the federal New Democratic Party selected its new leader. It is clear that the direction of the federal party under this new leader, someone who openly cheered for the defeat of the Alberta NDP government, is not in the interests of Alberta. /1

Alberta separatists are 20% of the vote, 100% of the noise. They've railroaded us into a conversation that erodes business confidence and pits us against each other. Absent polls suggesting any chance Albertans want this, the Premier should shut the door to a divisive referendum.
