I think one of the things that bugs me about the AI discourse is the idea that of course you can use it for some tasks, just not the ones that *I* specialize in.

Other than Xmas movies, I tend to watch very few movies. We started to doing a Sunday movie club last year and this year I’ve ramped it up further, mostly thanks to Tubi. Tonight I hit 100 movies so far this year. And here are the top ones and the bottom ones…

The most egregious act of corruption yet. If you can afford to pay $100k/mo, you can get early access to Trump's posts before anyone else does, allowing you to front-run market moves and profit millions, while the plebs play in the sandbox. People must go to prison for this.

Claude and Gemini are often correct. And they both point out real sources that I hadn't seen. Which is useful! But "often correct" isn't good enough. Road directions where 75% of the street turns are correct is not going to get me to the destination.

The short version is: after a month the AI has not given me any good reasons to trust it, and I am honestly freaked out by the confidence with which it weaves completely wrong facts into prose, and the confidence with which it writes and professionally formats entire sections of bullshit.

The rich are taking more and more while the rest of us are being squeezed into poverty. People desperately clinging to jobs won’t argue back as “the free market” makes us slaves and that’s the game plan 😡

Owen @Owennfa tweets:

THE LABOR DEPARTMENT JUST DROPPED NEW WAGE DATA AND IT'S BRUTAL.

Corporate profits up 47% since 2020.

Worker wages up 12% in the same period.

Meanwhile groceries up 35%, rent up 40%, utilities up 28%.

Your paycheck grew 12%. Your bills grew 35%.

The math is simple: you're getting poorer every year even when you get a raise.

You can't budget your way out of this. The system is designed so your income can never catch up to your expenses.

That's not an accident. That's policy.

The whole Hank Green thing just has me thinking on how we're in an era with a sycophantic flattery machine in the wake of huge amounts of unacknowledged COVID trauma and a billion other rising societal feel-bads and how dangerous a brew that all must be. Also, not unrelated to the gambling boom.

In the month of July, I averaged the most steps per day of any non-travel month since July 2020. (Two trip months did have more but that’s just because I walk everywhere on vacation.)

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

I never remembered to post that I refilled park sign magnets and keychains. If you want it as a pin, cufflinks or something else, reach out. I can do them custom.
