through sheer ubiquity a blockbuster becomes a unit of language & reference & legibility -- something The Odyssey itself has been for millennia -- & I think it's really good for that enormous referential power to be contested & challenged & engaged by those who've made a special study of it

As a robotics researcher, learning scientist, and author who has followed Realbotix for years, I'm compelled to do a Bluesky thread on this whole pivot that Realbotix is now trying, turning from humanoid sex robots to classroom "education" robots. Buckle up. nysfocus.com/2026/07/14/n... 🧵

Rural NY School To Launch Humanoid Robot Teacher

Plans to deploy a "lifelike" robot and avatar teaching assistant at Salamanca High School have sparked debate over the role of technology in schools.

Grateful for the oasis of Tour de Fleece posts when pretty much everything else is varying degrees of stressful right now. They’re making me want to make handspinning posts even though I don’t do Tour de Fleece, and I rarely post anything.

waymo locks you in the car and delivers you to a police station, then unlocks the door so you can open it and get shot to death by a robot dog with a rifle. it later emerges that the flock network in your neighborhood tracked you for months because of some algo/admin error.

“A simple data-entry error, magnified and broadcast nationwide by a growing surveillance network operated through an opaque partnership between a private company and public agencies, led police to identify me as a car thief and set up a sting to take me down.”

How Flock Cameras Wrongly Tracked Me for Days Over ‘Stolen’ Plates and Sent Police After Me

A simple error got magnified by Flock's nationwide surveillance camera network and ended with four cop cars boxing me in.

Anyone know about any south asian diaspora retirement communities (leaning progressive minded a plus) in/around the triangle (NC). Please repost for reach. Thank you.

Whenever people say things like “oh people are just ignorant and fear mongering about data centers” they’re always punching at some rando online but also they’re lashing out at the NAACP and communities in Memphis who are directly voicing how this affects them.

NEW: the US government intervened Monday on behalf of xAI in a lawsuit over its gas turbines, claiming that the company needs to run the turbines in order to power Grok, which is "vital" for national security lots of wild stuff in the filing:

Is fun how the general public is convinced that things I've been using for decades—em-dashes, the rule of three, and now, apparently, serif fonts—are signifiers for slop. We're training people to use bad heuristics and we're going to make both design and the written word worse.

I was talking about this the other day. The return of Serifs, their cultural association with AI, and by association, slop.

My aunt, Priscilla Stephens Kruize, can no longer live on her own at age 87 & assisted living costs are huge. Our family launched a fundraiser to help fund her care until she gets financial aid. She is a civil rights HERO who has given so much to others - and now she needs us. gofund.me/8db8323e6

While the world’s eyes are on fashion’s biggest night, we’re turning ours to the garment, retail, and warehouse workers who keep the industry running. From true love found on the picket line to a free tailoring school out of a Brooklyn basement — meet the New Yorkers who make it all possible.

There are people still living who fought — and watched their compatriots be murdered — for the passage of this act and to attempt to democratize America. To see it completed felled in the span of their OWN lifetime is just absolutely devastating.

I'll say it again, one of the worst things this rampant push to cram "generative AI" into everything has done is make people suspect bright kids of cheating when they're just nerdy or bookish or neurodivergent, sanding down their unique edges to fit into people's lowered, homogenized expectations.

very much enjoy the way the people who work with Ryan Coogler talk about him & obviously feel supported and inspired by the experience. Also love how he talks about the people he works with. Master class in respect and genuine admiration.

it took an expensive, coordinated effort & a lot of people saying “this doesn’t matter” to get from a bathroom ban costing one state $400 million & a gubernatorial race to “trans people must turn in their documents which become invalid in a few hours or face fines & potential jail time” in 10 years.

was met with widespread protests: state, county and city governments across the United States forbade their employees from non-essential travel to North Carolina; numerous corporations and firms curbed plans to hold events and create jobs in the state, and many
performers canceled performances in North Carolina to boycott the state; North Carolina's economy lost over $400 million in investments and jobs. The bill was also criticized by several religious organizations, and President Barack Obama denounced it and called for its repeal. McCrory ultimately lost his bid for re-election in 2016 to Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, a vocal critic of the law.

it's 2016: north carolina introduces a bill to ban trans people from using bathrooms safely. there's a national outcry; companies withdraw business up to and including the NCAA cancelling a publicized game. the bill fails. it's 2026: kansas passes a law nullifying trans people's licenses. crickets.
