I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Take a careful look at this map. As these places begin to hit their adaptation physical limits, 100s of millions of people are going to be on the move. We are utterly unprepared.

I've never seen anything like it. Salta, Argentina, has just recorded its hottest night on record during the climatologically coldest time of the year. The minimum overnight temperature did not fall below 26°C (78.8°F), pulverizing the previous monthly record by 7°C.

What they don't teach you about heatwaves: It's not just heat. It's: • Your crops dying • Your river drying (Rhine is low again, disrupting shipping) • Your lungs burning from wildfire smoke • Your power grid collapsing It's everything at once.

Who, if anyone, lives here? The older and more diverse a forest gets, the more cavities and other niches are opened up to all the many species of animals that might call it home. Protecting and expanding existing native forests should be an absolute priority.
