The difference between a misfortune and a calamity is this . . .

Desmond Morris was very important to me because he wrote about gay people in his book The Naked Ape and it was the first time I'd ever read or heard a description of gay people that wasn't sneering or judgemental. It was thrilling. About 40 years later I had a chance to tell him so. RIP Mr Morris

Let us salute the rogue genius of Desmond Morris, ape-watcher and last of the Surrealists, gone at 98. Here he is, less than 2 years ago, with his Man Ray tribute work - the photographic lips are those of Diana Dors, whom he dated in the 40s when she was still Diana Fluck.

Kate O'Brien had left Ireland by the #1926Census but this photograph of her was taken that year. Her first play, Distinguished Villa, was a huge success in 1926 which allowed her to become a full-time writer.
