Today I imagined myself as Arthur Smith from Elif Shafak’s “There Are Rivers in the Sky”, except for the wicked intellect, poverty, extremely polluted Thames, magical raindrop, etc. But I did get a bonus bevy of swans, and a suitcase full of “sea” glass.

Picture of a small sandy beach with high rises in the background (canary wharf) and an old pier with bolts sticking out on the left, and some apartments. The beach is along the Thames (between Limehouse and Wapping). On the beach are lots of pigeons and at least 6 swans.

It may be surprising to some that there are thousands of undescribed species just sitting in museums awaiting description. One of the main reasons this problem exists is that taxonomy is undervalued and underfunded, a trend that coincides with the devaluing of studies on natural history.

Dozens of Black-Veined White butterflies (Aporia crataeai) swarm a kayak by the Vagran River in the Ural Mountains of Russia. 🦋 The butterflies are attracted to the salt from human sweat on the kayaker's gear and clothing. This happens in early summer when these butterflies emerge. #butterfly

T: “H beat them out in one day, took over…” R: “Sh*# , same in NL, so that means…” (We were liberated - at least my hometown - by brave Canadians. Royal family found shelter in Canada & UK. But not sure T would grasp that “nuance”.)

Trump: "Greenland is very important for the United States, but it's not important for Denmark. In fact, when Denmark was overrun by the Nazis in less than one day -- Hitler beat them out in one day, took over -- they asked us to take care of Greenland. We shouldn't have given it back to them."
