Emily Bender and Nanna Inie: "all LLM output is probabilistically produced synthetic text". AI is not "intelligent". The chatbot does not have a clue what it just said to you. It does not *understand* the text it generates. So here's how to talk about it without making it sound like a living being

Are you annoyed with the anthropomorphizing language being used in the "AI" discourse, but not sure how to talk about this stuff without it? @nannainie.bsky.social and I have got you covered: buttondown.com/maiht3k/arch...

Truly bizarre story of how two papers from the 1940s by physics pioneer Max Planck have been "retracted" from Naturwissenschaften, potentially by an algorithm, for anachronistic "plagiarism" issues, leaving the current editor baffled (but it is Springer Nature so.... www.science.org/content/arti...

Why have papers by one of history’s most famous physicists been retracted?

Springer Nature has removed two studies by Max Planck. A bot may be to blame

Some new work on AI & science: A reporting checklist for LLMs in behavioral science Thanks to @sfeuerriegel.bsky.social for spearheading. As LLMs become more common in research, transparency is essential. We developed a reporting checklist for reporting how LLMs were used - please share! 1/4

A reporting checklist for large language models in behavioural science - Nature Human Behaviour

How much heartache would be saved if we routinely used cognitive interviewing/think-aloud procedures when developing instruments? We should know how respondents are interpreting instructions. Just frickin' ask people. It doesn't even need to be particularly rigorous.

My PhD Sajedeh Rasti has published a World View piece in Nature today: "Don’t compete, collaborate: why collective funding applications are the future" www.nature.com/articles/d41... She discusses how she successfully brought together a team of meta-scientists to collaboratively apply for funding.

Don’t compete, collaborate: why collective funding applications are the future

Scientists with disparate expertise writing grants together can identify knowledge gaps and drive progress — but systems must change to incentivize them.

Shackled, transferred, mocked: woman, 23, says she gave in to deportation after ‘humiliating’ ICE detention

Ana María was happy working in the US with an open asylum case. But after ICE detained her for months, she said she requested to go back to her native country
